Default So I just bought an aluminum 5.3 out of 2008 silverado

I have a 1964 impala ss that I am fitting this motor into, and I am trying to figure out what transmission to use. I currently have an original muncie 4 speed, but i'm pretty sure I would need a different flywheel? Being that I would like to optimize my fuel economy also I feel the muncie would be lacking as far as it's gearing and no overdrive. Though I am partial to a manual trans I would possibly consider an auto w/overdrive. I am also concerned with retrofitting this engine to a manual because it has the displacement on demand (DOD) technology and am not sure how that would work on a manual. I am kinda leaning toward a t56. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I see a lot of th400 in swaps so i guess those can bolt up to a 5.3. Not sure if modifications need to be done or not to make it work. However, that's a 3 speed and depending on your final drive ratio the RPMS might get a bit high on the highway. Nothing that 5.3 can't handle though.

I'm sure the 4L60E or 4L65E will fit as well. That's a 4 speed with over drive. I'd buy a mildly build one if I were you.

This all kinda depends on how much power you are looking to make as well.

You should ask this question in the auto or manual section, whichever trans you want or think you would like.

You can turn off the DOD through the tune. I would definately go T56! The DOUBLE overdrive and a 5.3 would net serious mpg. Depending on wieght and gears I would estimate close to 30mpg. Plus with having the extra gears you will be in your powerband alot more.

I went ahead with the t56, I got a really good deal so I ended up buying 2 of them. Ones out of 2004 gto and the other is out of a 98 camaro ss. The GTO shifter seems to be back about an inch longer than the SS. Are the gear ratio's the same on each (i would assume so)? Not sure which one to keep. Anyways I just put a ford 8.8 locking rear in the 64 with 4:10's. OUt of a 98 explorer, came with disc brakes too for a little over 100 bucks

Incorrect, only ratio that is the same is 4th- 1.00 to 1.

Research MN12's and the 6th for example is 0.57 to 1 in the GTO and Fbody is 0.50 to 1.

So, the consensus then is that the gto transmission is the one to go with because it has better gear ratios than the ss? Other than the ratios, they are the same, right? The ss has about 20k fewer miles than the gto and it also has a fancy aftermarket shifter. I'm sure it will work on the gto, but i havn't tried yet. Thanks for the feedback!
