Default 2001 Trans Am WS6 vs. 2001 T/A

Hi there.

Just wondering what is the difference between 2001 T/A WS6 engine versus 2001 T/A engine.

I remember reading from somewhere that WS6 has a LS6 intake+cam, and basic heads or was it LS6 intake + heads and basic cam.

Gurus, let me know how was it.

il be nice and let you in on a little secret... ALL 98-02 trans ams, ws6, z28, ss use the SAME ls1!! there is NO different ws6 motor just an ls1 with air intake/hood, suspension, tires, and exhaust. in 2000 they swapped ls1 intake manifold to ls6 but thats about it.

Motor wise, stock there is not much of a diff. If you read all the promo meterial the "Ram Air" Hood makes some more power and I beleive a "less" restrictive exhaust helps them make more power I think 10-15 hp diff which is almost nothing. Typicially the WS.6 suspension is not considered the best for drag racing as it is stiffer and counter productive.

A race can be simply be boiled down to Driving Ability, and What transmission each car has, also what options are in each car as in this case, Race Weight can be the difference maker.

To be very Nerdy, in 2001 and 2002, SOME Fbodies got a LS6 Block, which is considered to be the lightest of stock rotating assembly weight.

Thanks cure07,

I was sure there had been some difference because the difference in advertised hp ratings (325hp against 305hp). So it was the intake.

Follow up question. How does one visually separate these two intakes?

The LS6 intake has no egr. I did a lot of searching on the differences between a TA and a WS6. The WS6 comes with ram air hood, raised air box, tuned suspension, better flowing exhaust, and 17" rims. If you have a TA you are going to change the rims, exhaust, and intake anyways. So IMO you are just getting a hood with the WS6. LS6 intakes were put on the 01' and '02, and yes some rare ones came with the LS6 block. Also IMO, aslong as it came with Z rated tires, thats all the really matters. That gives you the 162mph speed governor.

On WS.6 Models look at the opening infront. The Ram Air cars get approx a 2" gap for air, NON WS.6 get about a 1" gap. People who swap on Ram Air hoods often look for what is called a "Tall base" for the Radiator Holder.

IMO the minor rated HP diff is insignifigant as other factors can vary results.

Please look at the FAQ sticky at the top of this section, it will answer these questions.

One thing I will say, people in this thread claiming that there is even a 10-15hp difference are wrong. The ram air hood (in stock form) does nothing to help power as the airbox is not sealed to the hood. And the less restrictive exhaust consists of only a muffler with 2.5" outlets rather than the base 2.25" outlets. The power difference is more like 3hp I'd say. Dyno tests over the years have confirmed this, as the numbers between the two on average are the same.
