Default Need LS1 motor

Hello guys, and I'm sure a few gals here too,

Just acquired a 1998 Trans Am WS6, except for the annoying spun rod noise there is very little wrong.

Looking for places that sell new or reconditioned short blocks or perhaps a whole used motor, any sugggestions on where to find a motor???

Trying to get this done 'cheap' as it will be the wifes summer car, not a racing machine

Thanks!

Brett

Tear it down and re-build it.

Thanks for the advise! Any rebuild kits out there? Although who knows if the cylinders will need to be bored until it's taken down.

More than likely if it's a Spun Bearing what will need to be done is the Rod re-sized, the Crank Turned & Polished, new Bearings, new Head Bolts & Head Gaskets cause you are going to have to pull them, and I'm sure a couple of other little things.

SDPC sells brand new LS6 crate engines for like 3200 bucks, cant beat that for a quick turnaround time with more power then the old LS1. I imagine rebuilding an engine bac to factory specs would run around 2k at least all said and done.

Thanks for the offers everyone! However not knowing how much work an engine with 190k miles will really need, instead of rebuilding we decided to buy a new GM LS1, $3500. Not as 'cheap' as we hoped but better than wondering, should be a great ride this summer.

$3500 can get you alot more than just a LS1.

I looked at SDPC and others, reman LS1's were going for about $4200. It's just I'm not sure I can trust all the valve work, heads, block, rod, etc... for the long-haul. Plus there is the time involved in rebuilding. While it may have been cheaper about a grand, we looking for reliable transportation, albiet from a racing machine The $3500 GM LS1 long-block has 3-year, 100k warrenty and I feel I can depend on it being reasonable put together. It wont have 400+ HP, but the stock 320 should be ok for 'reliable transportation'. I'm sure there is plenty of talent that could put a reliable motor together for less, but it takes time, and we kinda want to be driving this by May. Thanks again for all input!!!!!!!! Brett

The install is somewhat troubling, wonder if I could buy or rent a hoist for the body, any ideas what that weights (with the engine dropped) ? Thanks! B
