Default Just got my first ls1...

So yea I'm a newbie...I know nothing about these engines. I'm normally a ford guy..I've had a couple of mustangs, but I came across a good deal now I am a owner of a 98 ss camaro. So do these engines really have 350hp?. And im looking for some beginner mods..I believe It has a slp exhaust but thats pretty much it. I'm about to put in a short shifter..then from there on not sure. So any suggestions...I thought about a ls6 intake to really get me started....

I'm guessing you both missed where he said he's getting a short shifter!
congrats on your new car.
Post pictures up if you can.
IMO main things would be LT's and the LS6 intake then a nice cam and you'll be over 400rwhp with the right cam of course.

He's talking about buying a short shifter and you guys ask if he has a auto? Read...anyways. Welcome to ls1tech. NO i think your car is rated at 330 hp. You might have between 280-300 to the wheels.

Do some bolts on(lt's, ls6 intake like was already stated and a lid, maybe gears if you don't mind the loss in gas mileage for accelaration, and a good dyno tune) you will be fast and decently reliable. Just watch out for the weak rear ends in these cars. Don't power shift too much either or your t56 will bite the dust like any other tranny.

I believe I have a stock lid..and yea i have the 6spd t56. So the ls6 intake would be a good way to start off? Is the slp exhaust worth keeping...it sounds good but I don't know how it does for performance.

Ok 330 sounds about right...couldn't help it but I raced a mach 1 today and it was pretty much dead even then entire way. I have read about the weak rear ends my does make some sound when I am crusing so I want to check that out. Chances are I will go for a ls6 intake...I don't want a drag car but I do want it a little bit above an average ss.

The 98 ls1's were rated at 345hp 01-02 got a bump to 350 hp the mach 1 was probably an even race because they come standard with 3.55 gears and your z28 being an auto I will probably have 2.73 gears or at most 3.23's. For mods I'd start with a lid, ls6 intake, headers, exhaust

OMG...reading comprehension people! An LS1 is an LS1 is an LS1, regardless of year. Your '98 puts out close to 350, as does an '02. There's a lot of variations between years (98-00 had a little bit bigger cam, 01-02 had better exhaust manifolds and the ls6 intake), but mostly it depends on the engine. You're close to 350 and at the wheels can be anywhere from 280-320.

As far as your first mods, a lid should be #1. About $90, then go from there. LS6 intake is smart, then I'd go catback/LT's if you're looking for some extra power. Port and polish your throttle body and get a tune, and you should be in the neighborhood of 350+ rwhp. I also am a big believer in suspension upgrades, with new shocks being a priority.

Thanks for the info...but my mgw shifter will be number one asap. Then probably intake not to far behind..what about some different heads? or would that really start to burn a hole in the wallet.

I would do all the bolt ons before touching heads or cams. lid/P&P tb/ls6 intake/LT's/catback and Y/tune. All of those will support anything else you do to the car, unless you decide to get a bigger intake some day (worry about that later ). Being you have a catback (if it's the dual/dual, it'll work well with LT's, the LM's seem to get too loud with headers), you're already part way there! Using Pacesetter LT's, an ORY, used LS6 intake, and a lid you can finish bolt ons for around $1k or so.

Have fun with the MGW tho!

Shifter and your bolt ons is a good place to start.

Congrats on the LS1 man.

Since your on the way to the shifter, I'd say next things should be a lid and some LT headers like already stated and youve already got a catback on it.

A set of 4.10's would really help too.

So is your car an auto?

Sorry, I just had to. Funny how many people reply to stuff without bothering to really read it.
