Default Descreening the MAF

So I was wondering if I took my screen out if it would cause any problems or throw any codes? I also noticed that it is not held in by a metal circular clamp/pin like my old LTx MAF was...is that the case for the LSx MAF?

Thanks!

IDK but most will tell you to leave it as it smooths out the airflow and gives a more accurate reading. On the other hand the Z06 85mm MAF is descreened ......I honestly don't think you will pick up enough to to notice so I would leave it...

Leave it.... As stated by SOMBitch (lol that's funny to say) it is better to have the screen for more accurate readings Especially if you get the car tuned later down the road. There isn't enough (if any) performance gain from removing it.

But SOMBitch.... the Z06 85s i've seen have screens. and the LS2 85 maf I bought new has a screen. ???? Anway......

remove it if it makes you feel better, but later down the road you'll need it.....

It has a tune done already...although I may cam it at some point down the road which will mean another tune. Other then the tune aspect, if I should take it out will it throw a code? I would think taking it out would help it flow air better...although that doesn't always mean better performance Thanks guys!

Someone on here did some videos a while back to show in real world what these "stupid mods" actually do. Seems like it made an additional half a car pull in the video. The F-body 98+ has a straight shot from airbox to throttle body. There is really no "need" for it to be there unless you have some crazy routing of an intake on the car. The only function it provides is to take the turbulence out of the air before it hits the MAF that is it so it can take a more accurate reading. I don't have one on mine and I can't say it changed a thing, but I didn't do a dyno pull before and after. That would be the only way to tell. Don't think anyone will ever do that.

wont throw a code but no need to take it out. you will not gain anything.

No factory GM ZO6 MAF (C5 or C6) came with a MAF screen. Some aftermarket ones do, but my buddies SLP 85mm did not and neither did my Granatelli 85mm.

You can pull it out and have zero issues, some members with A4's do.

I would leave it. I have seen many pictures and a few videos of people cleaning there maf screens of debris and bugs. I have no idea how they got past the filter but pictures and videos tell few lies.

I see no reason to remove it. There just don't seem to be any gains.

I've never ran a screened MAF and have never had any issues. If it makes even the slightest difference, why not? In theory, it should allow more airflow and I've never seen any negatives come from it.

A lot of people say it is to smooth airflow. This can be useful for cars that have some bends in their intake tract (GTOs come to mind) but on our F-bodies, it is a straight shot.

Leave it in. There is no real benefit by removing it and it can create some issues down the road if you tune the vehicle /add mods.

Appreciate the feedback guys. So how exactly would it effect tuning?

Because it does smooth the airflow. The "straight shot" has little to do with it.

If anyone pulled the screen and ran faster it was because it wasn't reading as much air and leaned the car out a little. Which isn't a bad thing on a untuned car. As far as the screen being a restriction (on a mildly modded car) it's all BS.

I've ran my car with and without the screened MAF (SD tune both ways) and it ran exactly the same. And that was with the AFR being the same also.

I bought my car with the MAF descreened. I have had 0 issues with anything. My friend is tuning my car now and no problems.

I just got my car tuned, and the tuner showed me where the maf turbulence was causing the readings to fluctuate and make it more difficult to tune.

I find small bits of leaves and crap in my screen periodically, Not sure how it gets past my air filter, but if not for the screen, it would have got sucked right in.

for people that find debris on their screen, what type of filter/lid setup are you using? ive been on an slp lid and blackwing filter and have never found any foreign object on the screen.

I think at this point I will just leave it be. I also find it interesting that some of you guys are finding debris on the screen. This filter looks as if it would stop most anything large in size. Who know s though...I have found pretty much anything is possible when it comes to owning LTx/LSx cars.

FYI- These guys show a 2001 vette MAF with a screen and a 2002 without.

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...6/2002ls6.html

Of course, I can not verify the accuracy of them. However, I am leaning towards believing it as I am double checking my "How to build High Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V8's" book. On page 51 they talk about the '02 Z06 MAF having the screen removed.

I'm looking into buying one and found this thread, so the screen/ no screen is of interest to me as the one I'm looking at buying is advertised as a Z06 MAF and has a screen (meaning it's likely a 2001 MAF)

I hope this helps.
