Rear gear question

Rear gear question
Well, brought my new ride home today. 99 z28 convert, stock except for a flowmaster cat back. I saw on the data tag the dreaded 2.76 highway gear. Already did a little research and talked to a guy at a rearend shop about getting the gear changed. I will have to change the posi unit to get the 3.73 that I want (need!). I asked him about the "wide" gear that can be used with my carrier. He recommended against it because he said that they will whine. So what's the real truth? Is he just trying to sell me a $500 Eaton posi that I don't necessarily need? For almost $1200 to change the rear over, a 12 bolt or 9 inch doesn't sound all that much more expensive. Really like to hear some opinions from people who have gone through this. thanks.

Um save for a rearend 9" lil stronger than 12 bolt. That guy a tool for trying to charge you for a "new" 10 bolt. It will break...how long? Well it's a ticking time bomb. Get a custom 9" slap it in and forget about it than the real fun begins :-)

I would not waste my money on a 9" or a 12-bolt for a stock A4 car, unless you plan to do a lot of racing. I would also not waste my money on a carrier swap for the stock 10 bolt.
Just do the gear swap if you want.

I'd rather have 2.73s and a higher stall TC than 3.73s with a stock stall.
There is really nothing wrong with 2.73s behind a 4L60E (3.06:1 1st gear ratio). You can still get a pretty decent launch. It's not like the old TH350/400 days where you had 2.52 1st gear trans ratio.
