Default Picked Up A 98 Trans Am...Dissapointed with Exhaust

Hey!

I recently picked up a 98 Trans Am. It's bone stock, with the exception of a Hooker cat-back exhaust. I thought it would a be louder than it is, although the tone sounds nice! Anyway, can I just get an exhuast cut-out for it, or is it a lot more confusing then that? Thanks for any feedback!

A simple cutout is fine. If you want it really loud, you can just remove the whole exhaust system and have open headers/manifolds.

Thanks for the reply! I'm sure my nieghbors would like that! Ha, ha! Do I have to buy a cutout kit or can I just go to any custom exhaust shop and have them to it themselves?

Most exhaust shops can make them..

http://www.summitracing.com/search/?...d=cutout&dds=1

I would buy one of the cheap ones from Summit and get a shop to weld it in, just get the correct diameter for your Y-pipe.

I would do headers and make it faster and louder!

not sure how loud you want her but headers and ORY would make it a bit louder. And add power.

Cut outs are easy and simple. Get some Longtubes on there with that Hooker Cat back, then see if the sound is Dissapointing.

Just yank the cat back off and run open ORY i know of a guy doing that and it sounds decent for a free mod, and it made it run considerably better.

Plus I'm assuming u still have a stock Y-pipe...crawl urself up under there and look at it...see that pinch!? yeah GM put that there...that's ur problem #1

Now open your hood. See those big heavy looking things comming off ur motor going to that pinched up Y-pipe...problem #2

Solve those and you be waaaayyy happier...promise

(then do your cut-out )

Thanks for the help guys! I had one question......can I just buy an off road Ypipe and hook it up the stock manifolds? Would that make a difference in sound? I'm on a bit of a budget, so I cant go all out with headers and stuff. I was also thinking......is there a way an exhaust shop could remove the Hooker muffler for a bullet styled one like a Loudmouth 2?

I'm sure you plan on lts in the future so what I would do is either...

Buy a cutout and have a shop weld it up.. obviously the cheapest. Or sell your exhaust and switch to a loudmouth

If you plan on eventually doing LT's, I'd just get a cutout now and keep the Hooker catback in, that Loudmouth might be too loud if you plan on doing more. The cutout will definitely make it louder, lol, plus you can keep it on and it will work well with LT's/Y (catted or off road) in the future if that's in the works.

ORY if you can depending where you live, a little louder but more importantly makes the tone sound badass.

I am always surprised how great a simple y pipe and cutback set up sounds on stock manifolds.

I had a magnaflow muffler put in and it wasnt very loud, until i had the ORY welded on. that seemed to double how loud it is for me.

Thanks guys! If I went to a custom exhaust shop and asked them if they could do asn electric cutout, would they understand or give me a WTF look? The reason I ask is it doesn't seem to be too popular. I could be wrong.... The ORY pipe sounds like a pretty decent idea too, although, we have emission testing up here!!!
