free mods, Long tube headers, exhuast, lid, tune, then if you want to get into the internals, cam/heads would wake it up ;D

6speed or auto?

Yes, do the bolt-ons first, then go with a cam and stall.

I would go with a lid and a nice cat-back to start. Not engine-related, but sub-frame connectors and better struts/shocks are good starter mods as well.

Could not agree more. I have a 2001 also and the first thing I did was a sub frame connector followed by a C.A.I, new plugs and MSD wires, long tube headers with a catted y pipe, 3 inch cat back exhaust and a good dyno tune and you will be surprised what you'll end up wrhp.

Mod 1 buy a compact car for a daily driver.
Mod 2 strip ever last bit of extra weight out of the car and jam in the biggest forced induction/nitrous sucking motor that can afford. Then add 30lbs of boost or a 300 shot of nitrous maybe both.
By following the Mod 1, Mod 2 schedule you will not have wasted the other 20 modding steps that will happen before you reach Mod 1

Start with a Good converter. (Yank, Precision or circle D). Our cars make enough power to go low 12's if you can get the motor into the power quicker.
After that Id suggest gears, plugs and wires, filter lid, headers, an exhaust and a tune by "frost" or local dyno.
You will see the biggest improvement from a converter and a transmission tune; then gears.

Always be skeptical about what advice you get on "free" mods and ALWAYS do your due diligence before you go hacking on your ride. You don't want to get

Just a reminder that these cars were pretty well engineered from the start. The minor bolt ons don't make too much of a difference but you start changing very much and you are going to notice your gas mileage going away and your ride comfort taking a hit.

If you are planning more mode later or want the converter locked up under full throttle you may want a multi disc. If not you could run a single. Like orange juice said, your mileage will be affected and your car will act differently. Call the manufacturer for their suggestion on what product to buy. Also, take mine and everyone else's opinion with a grain of salt.

I did a cam, exhaust and shift kit first. It took me from a 13.6 average to a 13.1 average; with a best of 12.94. I wish I had done a converter and gears first.

Where to start really depends more on on where you want to end up. You looking for a few extra HP or are you trying to reach a particular goal?

It's so easy to start with the basic bolt ons and the free mods that are worthwhile, however you might be better served to bypass some of those expenses depending on the direction you're trying to go.

For instance, if you are a nitrous fan and are just trying to hit the 12's at the track, slap on 100 shot and a good tire and get to work. If you have greater goals understand that these parts all must compliment each other properly to maximize the benefits -- i.e. your stall selection should compliment your gear selection, cam selection, etc.

My recommendation: figure out what your end goal is and then read up on each of the individual mods that could get you there. Once you decide your going with a specific mod, then we can help guide you better on specific product choices.
