Is my TA really that slow?
Hey everyone. I was on my way home today from getting my oil changed when I was getting onto this really long street that is good for top end runs when out of no where comes a new Mustang GT right on my ***. The speed limit on the street is 55, and I was already going 70. He floored it and when he passed me I looked and saw the GT badging. I waited until he got ahead of me and then I floored it, but to my great surprise I just couldn't pull the bastard!! He was already ahead of me, but I just couldn't gain any ground on him at all. I am certain he was stock just by listening to it, but I couldn't tell if he was an M5 or A4. Then when we got to the end of the street and turned, we got up to about 35 or so and then he floored and I followed behind him. He got the jump on me, but once again I couldn't gain any ground at all. Now I could have sworn that my A4, SLP Loudmouth, TSP lid, and gutted cat Trans Am would be able to at least beat a new Mustang GT since I'm pushing more power than him, but well, I couldn't. Do you think there is something wrong with my car, or do GT's just pull like that from a roll? Time for me to get a Yank PT4200(damn funds are limited though). Please help me anyone. Thanks.

I'm thinking it was. The exhaust was definitely stock, and I didn't hear the whine of a supercharger or the whistle of a turbo/blow-off valve. I don't think he was spraying, but I could be wrong. The car didn't even lope at all, so I'm guessing no cam. For some reason it feels like many cars that shouldn't be able to take me are able to since I have the shitty stock converter(even though I haven't raced any.) The bad thing is, I've only raced my car twice. The GT today and another Mustang GT(probably a 2000-2001 or so) yesterday, and sadly I had the same results! I just can't reel them in!

Lets clear some things up in here. The new 99+ GT's have 2 cams ( overhead ) . It cost some big $$ to swap them out, and there is only a small HP gain. Headers don't do anything to a stock 281 mod-motor, even with cams. With a 150 shot a 5spd with a decent 60' will run a low 13. Those are some of the reasons why I sold my 2001 GT and bought my SS. I was killed many times by my buds 99Z A4 , dig, roll, highway, didn't matter.

I'm no expert on the subject, but the LS1 likes alittle back pressure, you are basicly running an open exhaust, which will cost you some torque......and from a rolling start, a stick shift will always have an advantage over an auto. ( I know you said you weren't sure if it was a five speed or not) My advice, go to a dyno, and put down some numbers, see where your at, or, just keep throwing parts at it until it " feels " fast enough for you. I'm sure the Dyno guys will have good advice, and offer to tune it using LS1 edit or something like it, then you will have a foundation to build on. Oh ya, one more thing, don't worry about what the other guy had, or didn't have, worry about your car, and making it perform the best it can, next time you see him, you can put that FORD driver where he belongs, looking at your tail lights !!

are you doin a 4-2 shift if not ya need to watch you speed ya dont wanna get stuck between gears that = fucked! ya wanna make you slow so your tranny downshifts from a roll with my gears its approx 23mph or 50 mph if i get a 35 roll im done same thing at 70im done so slow to the right speed and slam it dont ***** foot it hell even better get em from a dig thats where the ls1 really shines ya gotta watch all the sc fordss thelll get ya up top if ya can get a good enought break off the line beacouse if ya aint winnning by 60 against a sc ford ya aint winning their just gonna start pullin more

I'd definitely put your car on the dyno and maybe hit the track to see what kind of numbers & times you're putting down... at least then you'll be able to see what may be wrong with your car, if anything at all.
FWIW, I was pulling on newer GTs before my gears and headers... now they're just plain not a challenge. You should at least be able to reel them in when they get a jump on you.

its tough to tell...when my car was stock (lid only), i nailed it next to a bolt on fox 5.0 gt from about 35. i hit a dead spot at the very bottom of second and i couldnt reel him in. A4+Stock converter=scary slow from a roll. thats probably all it is but like was already said, go hit the track and/or dyno and make sure you're in good working order.

Dude ... you both drive AUTOMATICS ... there is no driving skill involved in an auto from a 70mph roll .... you mash the gas, car does the rest.
As for the actual post ... the guy probably had an M5 and had a good jump on you (as you said) so he was already going a few mph more then you were when you jumped on it ... at 70 your auto should shift down to around 5,000 in second gear. The problem here was probably that he had an M5, vs your A4 ... he had a decent head start, and an m5 stang will not trap much lower then your non-stalled a4 ... especially if you have 2:73 gears and not 3:23's. If you had run him from a dead stop, it probably would've been a different ballgame.
Plus, you never know if he was stock or not ... tons of cars go for a stock sleeper look ... and he may have sprayed, who knows.
