Default Buy ported heads new or have AI port....

I'm in the market for some 243's P/P along with my new intake so i can swap them out all together. Would it be better/cheaper to buy the new TSP Stage 2.5 243's or to buy a set of used 243's for 300-400 bucks and have someone like AI P/P them....thoughts?

I think TSP's might be a little more cost friendly but I think AI 226cc 243s will give you more power overall. I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and what the goals are for your car. Do you have a cam already?

I pulled the stock heads off my car during the Christmas - New Years shutdown week and sent them to Advanced Induction yesterday for the full CNC machining package; they're going to grind me a cam to go with them.

I'll know for sure if this was the right move once I get everything back together and strap it to the dyno, but I have been very impressed with the guys over there in our conversations to this point. IMO it makes sense to get a package from somebody that is designed to work together if you can (TSP, AI, whoever).

I plan to buy some stock 243s and send them to AI and have them grind me a cam in the future. The only downside is, you have to make sure you find a good condition pair of heads to start with.

I think you'd be better off with tsp. It's just no worries. You know what you are getting. You never know with used heads. Plus it will be cheaper I'm sure.

If this question was for me, the heads from that car are 853s but they basically get the 241 port job, so they're essentially 241s when they come back.

The cam is .600/.600 @ 226/230 with a 110LSA (112 would've been "standard" but they're going to do me up a 110 because of the sound I want).

Buy new 243 casting heads from AI for $700ish and then pay for their cnc magic. That's my plan.

Ya 853s are basically 241s and can still make good power. Sounds like a good combo.

I think it will be; the car is a "street toy" according to Phil at AI (he's right) and is a convertible, so I am not looking to make tremendous horsepower. Bone stock the car put 274hp to the wheels on a notoriously stingy dyno after a tune; I am very interested in what the bigger lid, bigger MAF, head work, cam, headers, ORY, and cat-back are going to do for me.

I cannot see why sharing this would be an issue, as I did not receive any special pricing. I am paying $1250 for the following:

Machining & Labor Operations:
- Disassembly, Cleaning, and Inspection
- 100% CNC Ported Intake & Exhaust runners
- 100% CNC Unshrouded & Re-contoured Chambers
- 100% CNC Competition F1/Cup Quality Valvejob
- PCD milled to ensure flatness, surface finish & achieve desired chamber volume (62-70cc)
- Precision Valve Grinding Stock Valves
- Assembly for your specific Application using your supplied components
Furnish & Install Following:
PSI-1511ML Nitrided & Shot Peened Beehive Valve Springs
GM-12482062 & GM-12482063 Valve Seals

Round-trip freight via UPS, insured for two grand, is about $100 from the Boston area.

228R is like .589/.589 @ 228/228 around 112 LSA if I remember correctly (that was my cam choice before I decided to let AI do it all to prevent any mismatch of components), which is very close to the cam AI is grinding for my car.

Is this a DD for you? What heads are on it? If this is a toy car, pull the heads and send them to AI for porting and save yourself some serious bucks; that 228R isn't going to need more air than the porting package I bought can supply.

IMO FAST is a waste of dollars for your cam choice.

I would buy a new set of ported heads. Not only do you not have to worry about older heads and shipping/downtime, but you can always sell off your current 243s to recoup the cost.

So for basically the same price ($1500 new - $500 or $1000 porting job), you have a brand new set of heads and no downtime.

I will be sending my 241's to AI and I spoke with him about HP numbers and was very impressed with what he said he can get out of these heads with his cam and intake matching program. Cant wait to hear about your motor when its done.

What did he say he can get out of a 241 with their cam and intake?

I'll tell you, in about [3] months, what we're really getting on the dyno; need to get the heads back, get the car put back together and tuned. If there's no snow on the ground maybe I'll have an answer a little sooner.
