Matching cam to factory heads
I have been reading alot about cam selection in our forums as well as my LS1 build book that was published in 2003, but have not found the answer that I'm looking for.
I have a 2000 Camaro SS 6 speed car. I have a ported and polished throttle body and an SLP air box lid. This winter, I plan to install a set of long tube headers, 4.10 gears, and a cam (along with valve springs).
Taking the heads off is not in the cards for me. I only put about 1k miles on it per year. the car goes out on date night and to cruise nights.
I want a cam that makes good power down low and mid range. For cruising around car shows, I would really like to have a tough sounding idle.
I was hot for the GMPP HOTCAM, but was not sure if there was another cam that someone has experience with that may be a better performer with the factory heads and piston valve reliefs. Any help or guidence would be much appreciated.

EPS has the TT3, which is a 224/230 111lsa which would be a really good option.

I know you should have no clearance problems with the 224/228 111lsa cam. Yeah, you could go bigger with out any clearance issues, but at what point it does become an issue is hard to say; you would have to check and see if valve reliefs are needed. I think you'll be happy with the 224/228 111lsa, it'll have a good DD powerband and it'll make good power and sound great!

regarding valve springs. will the LS6 springs have enough pressure, or is there a better choice? remember, I do not want to pull the heads off, so whatever I get will need to be a direct replacement. I've seen bee-hive springs and double springs, but thought that one of them required the heads to be machined for fitment.

stock ls springs are only good for stock gm cams.for the cam you mentioned some comp cam 918 or pac 1218 will work.no maching needed for most ls springs.if you buy a cam from Texas Speed you get cam,springs,harden push rods.you will need a cam install kit and spring tool.who will tune it ?frost dose great mail order tuning.go to ls1howto.com for instructions and pics.torque down the rocker arms with the lifter on the cam base circle.

I have a buddy here in the Kansas City area who has been really happy with the drivability tune that he got on his 99 z28. I would be interested in trying a mail order tune. Have any of you actually ran one? Thanks for the input.

You'll need to rent a pulley puller from autozone or somewhere similar that rents tools. They have a valve spring compressor too but don't get it...you have to have the heads off to use it. You also need to buy a tool to hold the lifters up or make some (search dowels for cam install)

i posted the same question a while back and was recommended a 227/231 .614/.617 LSL lobes on 110LSA......i couldn't be happier, makes mad power down low, tuner said it was the flattest torque curve he's ever seen, and i hit my 400rwhp goal with shitty stock 806 heads

WOW. that sounds nice. did you have to cut valve reliefs in your pistions for that lift with only 110 LSA? who ground your cam for you? Thanks for posting.

no flycutting, it's not a big cam by any means.....i installed with all of the confidence in the world that it would clear.....it's a comp cam, i bought it from HKE....the cam guru who recommended it said something about 9* overlap being perfect for that badass, slow lope, classic muscle car sound in a stock cube motor......my dad flipped when he heard it, said it sounded just like his old big block cars

the best thing is that the tight LSA puts the power down lower in the rpm's, so i don't have to spin my motor really high with weak stock rod bolts......my rev limiter is set at 6300.......i hear alot of people are very happy with EPS cams, i'll probably try one of those if i get another F-body

Some of the recommended cams I've noticed have the same specs for INTAKE AND EXHAUST. example:(Texas Speed 228R awesome cam. 112 lsa or lower. 228/228 .588.588) Others have had MORE EXHAUST lift and duration. example:(227/231 .614/.617 LSL lobes on 110LSA)
