Default How long can I run an LS1 without water

Looking at a wrecked LS1 camaro. I've always gone with less than 1 minute but that has always been with iron block motors.

Are you just trying to check out the engine before you buy or something like that? I dont see it being much of a problem to run it for maybe up to a minute. Shouldnt heat up that quick. I would keep it to a minimum though. Run it just long enough to listen for bad engine sounds and check for smoking out of the exhaust. I personally would keep it under 30 seconds just to make sure I didnt damage it. It would be a shame to test it and decide to buy it, only to find out that you hurt it in the process. Dont take the chance of warping the heads or something. If the engine is still in the car and the radiator is still hooked up, take a few old milk jugs full of regular water to put in it just for testing purposes and drain it later.

Yeah if the cooling system is still all there just put water in it. Distilled water is 89 cents a gallon lol. Would you rather spend 89 cents or 1k?

Correct just to listen and check not to drive. Radiator is removed.

Hmmmm not very long then. Just use some common sense and you'll be fine.

Aluminum blocks will take a few minutes to reach operating temp (>200*) FYI.

just watch the temp gauge and dont let it go past the middle for sure, but i would not even let it go that high.
