Default Burning Oil?

I got a 2000 Trans am, i use 5w-30 Mobile 1. When i punch it, blue smoke will come out the exhaust. I have been prolly goin through a little over a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. this seems way to excessive, should i worry about it? thanks a lot.

Do a search on this web board on the oil burning thing. I have read in a few places that the LS1 has had some problems burning oil. I justcan't remember the year it was to where it got really bad.
On the knock portion, that is called a "piston slap". According to GM that is normal. Others knock louder than others and some do not knock at all. It will go away after the engine is warmed up.
Check this out as well on the piston slap.

Blue smoke is usually indicative of ring problems. Get a compression and a leak down test to see what is going on with that car.

Switch to a slightly thicker oil. Mobil 1 5w30 is formulated on the low end of the 30wt scale, it's almost 5w20. Try switching to M1 0w40 and I bet consumption goes down.

They are tearing mine down (2001) as we speak for ring problems. Had to install the newer design rings. If you ever get an oil consumption test done, after they check it, spend an hour dyno tuning and you'll lose some for sure. That's what happened to me. Ended up losing 1 1/4 quarts in 1,400 miles. Thicker oil doesn't help, tried that last summer.

I "think" the problem was 2000 to the early 2002's. From what I hear, they went to the new ring design during 2002 production.

could be valve seals or rings, do you run the car hard all the time?

Actually, I need to add that my oil ring gaps were lined up on 3 pistons and they found one cylinder wall bore out of spec. So now I get a new engine.

so....i dropped my car off. They said they ran compression tests and leakdown and it was all within spec. These used car dealers like to bullshit you so i dont know what to belive. They said that it was burning oil excessivly because the oil was really thin because "they forgot to change it" before they sold it to me. They said they changed it and it should be better. I am seeing blue smoke when i rev it, they say its raw gas, i dont belive these guys, what should i do now?? Thanks a lot!

If you have an extended warranty take it to a GM dealership and have them check it. Could be covered under the Piston Slap service bulletin.

If it is knock they have a service bulletin for that where the rocker arms gets replaced but is usually diagnosed when you do an oil change and find needle bearings.

If no warrnaty.... I do not know that you can do anything if the used car lot does not back it.

well for i said anything about a knock. and i mean to originall say its been burning a quart ever 1000 miles, not 3000 miles. They say its because the oil hadnt gotten chnaged and it was really thinned out, they love to bullshit you. Gimme some feedback
