Z28 cuts out at 120mph...
My buddies 99 Z28 m6 starts to cut out and miss right when he hits 120mph.
It runs fine and pulls hard all the way up until the speedo gets to 120 and the car won't go any faster. It feels like hitting the rev limiter but worse. Is there a govener from the factory or is it somthing else? The only mods are a lid and exhaust.
Thanks guys

If he still has the stocker tires, check the speed rating on them. If the tires are Z-rated then it should top out at 160 or so.. But if he has the cheapos.. W or Y rated or something like that. Then he'll have a limiter at 118 or 119.
Which pretty much sucks ***.. Time to get either a Predator or HPP3.
The factory set the top speed of the car according to the speed rating of the tires. I believe Z-rated tires were an extra option or something.

That being said - as stated any of the PCM controllers can eliminate the cutoff.

well i'm glad yer in cali if yer drivin 120........i'm far away from the pieces of flesh that will surely be torn off your body as the car flips and rips apart from using the wrong tires!

my buddies 99 gt stang cut off @ 120. with his new 3.73 rear end and little bitty slicks, his car was cutting off on the 1/4 when he was actually only doing about 98 because the car thought he was still going 120. i found his speedo output and wired a simple toggal switch into one of the wires which we ran up between the console and the driver seat. at any speed, you can flip the switch and the speedo dies. he has no problems with the SES light or performance at all. it was frustrating that first night at the track though when his car was runnin better than ever but still cuttin off before the finish.

Well, I've hit 142, without realizing it, while on the Interstate ... gettin' it on with a new (390 HP) Cobra ... no traffic ... open space on both sides of the road. When I looked down at the speedo, it was a little scarey ... imediately backed off. The Superchip programmer knocked off the rev limiter successfully. Well, that was bone stock 6 months ago ... lookin' for that Cobra now. This time, it will be at the dragstrip in a controlled environment.

As others have stated, the speed limiter was dependent on the type of tires your Camaro originally came with. Cars with the GSC or RSA Goodyears came with a 162 mph limiter since the tires were Z-rated. The non-Z rated tires had a limiter at 120 mph.
You guys should have been around in '98 when we didn't have programmers or custom tuning yet. It was HILLARIOUS when guys on the net learned their brand new Z had a 120 limiter on it. I believe none of the Pontiacs had the lower limiter, as they should have all came with Z-rated tires.
Chevy should have just put Z rated tires on stock. It is a friggin sports car isn't it?[/QUOTE
Its also another way for them to make more money
DO NOT take the limiter off unless you get new tires

i've done more then 165 in mine, i used to have the factory 118 mph limiter, but speed inc's basic tune killed that. i got that tune for a good deal less then they usually charge so it was cool
Screw just the Z rated tires... the Z28's should have come with 17x9's too. Those 16's don't cut it.
