Built the LT1 or Buy an LS1
I currently have a 94 Z28 M6, I love the car, but its getting alittle too many miles on it. This summer I either want to take out and rebuilt the Lt1 and put some new goods in it. Or I could sell it, put the rebuild money with it and get a lower mileage LS1. I don't know what to do. The LS1 would be better in the long run, but the LT1 is there and ready to get some nice goodies. I'd like to heard everyones thoughts on my conflict before i make my choice. Thanks

Depends what your tastes are man. Yeah the LS1 can be made fast easier but you also have a much less exclusive aftermarket. If you wanted to stroke your LT1 then no problem about 30 companies make kits to stroke a small block like the LT1 whereas you are limited to roughly 3-4 with the LS1. Finding somebody to build the LT1 is gonna be alot simplier also. Just about everybody has rebuilt a small block can't say the same about the LS1. Things like cams are about 1/3 less money. I have seen alot of fast LT1's so don't knock it. It is a good motor but the LS1 is a much all around better design I will for sure admit. If the LT1 has never done you any wrong then I figure what the hell go for it redo the LT1. Also getting a LS1 car is nice but I'm motivated by money and I would hate to start another car payment when I'm basically gonna play with the car. Thats just me though

I agree the parts for the LT1 are cheaper, and the small block is a proven performer. I have a small block in my pickup and it is abused every time I drive it and it never stops. The LS1 is a natural performer though, it responds to mods well and seems to be just as durable as the small block.

I went thru the same dilema a few years ago. My 97 LT1 had been good to me. Just think of it this way = optispark, 40-50 less rwhp than LS1, steel driveshaft, reverse cooling in the LT1. Get the LS1 man, you won't regret it.

if you're planning on driving it as a daily driver, i'd go with a LS1. lt1 you can spice up easier but it would re-duce its potentail daily driveablitly. i've never had an LT1, always wanted one and do a H/C on her. but i couldn't be happier with my LS1, awesome power, good daily driver (thats what i use mine as) and you can get yourself in 11's no prob, and still drive that bad boy everyday with a/c, and listening to your system. not saying you couldn't do the same with a LT1, but unless your going for a drag car, i'd go with the LS1. its your choice on what you like though

Get the LS1.. I had a 97 SS a while back..Loved it..However LS1 F'body's and LT1's are apples and oranges as far as performance! 98-02 are just all around more efficent, faster and down right built better from the ground up. Just my .02 cents!

LS1 it tends to be a bit more respected...theres alot of mustang owners out here...that will not race anuything with an LS1 lol...but they love giving the LT1's a try...
and either way the LS1 will be easy to mod...well built one of the strongest most high tech and powerfuil motors ive ever seen
and the LS1's also got a pretty good aftermartket..

You are at an LS1 site so the obvious answer is to get an LS1.
But irregardless... Get an LS1 and turn it into a 427.

Well knowing what I know now (preformance wise) I prolly would have kept my '97 TA and built the **** outta it......396 sounds good!!! And bought a nice winter car-daily driver for work, but I fell for the looks of the WS6 and spent the cash to buy it and have to drive a POS in the winter-dd. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my TA....but I dont think it was the best finacial decision I have ever made. Good luck

I say this could go either way performance wise. Modded is modded! Stock for stock a LS1 is much better, but I do love my LS1. My 12.4@110 second 94Z wasn't bad either. LS1's are alot quicker though with the same money spent, mod for mod in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm going to look into it alittle bit more. I'll kinda on the LS1 side now. The only thing about getting an LS1 is trying to find one. I looked at a 98 Z28 A4, 79000 miles, bone stock, and the guy wouldn't take anything less than 15000. I hope everyone isn't going to ask that much. But i'll see, Thanks

Now you have to think the extra money you will have to dish out for a ls1 car could easliy go in to that lt1 car of yours......Say you have to dish out a extra 5k for a ls1 car (which is lite if you ask me) take that 5k and through it in the lt1 and you will have something quicker than a stock ls1.....That is if you spend your money wisely..

If you are keeping it stock then Get the LS1 but who does that??? If I could do it all over again I would have kept my 93 with H/C S-trim and street twin. But I believed all the hype and got the LS1. Actually it took the PERFECT color and price local to get me to buy one but I did it. SHoot my 93 would walk all over this one and it was paid for!
If you are planning on big mods then keep the LT1. At least you know it a 80000 F-body is a crap shoot! JMHO

There is one reason to dump the LT1, and that is optispark. Browse LT1 forums, and you'll find guys constantly struggling with driveability problems. I've owned both - nearly equivalent cars, and stock to stock, there is no question - the LS1 is much faster, and therefore, though more expensive, a better platform for modding.
