Affordable 427?

Affordable 427?
I've seen several companies selling re-sleeved "super stroker" 427's in the $20,000+ range (+ core). My (naive) question is ... why so much? I've seen crate Hemis and Viper V10 and Chevy 572's for almost half that much (apples & oranges?). Is there someone out there that sells a 427 (or similar displacement) for a price an average Joe or Chip can afford? I've also heard that the resleeving process has improved over the past year. Any comments?

yea, but a crate hemi wont go mid 10's in a full bodied F-body, and then drive home with the air conditioner. You cannot look at a 427 like it's just a crate motor....It's SUPPOSED to be top dog in the LS1 ranks. It's like getting every option you an get from a shop and telling them to build it. Do i think there are lower C.I. motors that can do just as good?? Hell yea, the fastest LS1 in the country is under 390C.i.
The only way to lower the price is to not go Sleeved..go iron block...it cost 700 bare...have it sonic tested to see what kind of bore it can handle, and go from there.....even at that it is NOT cheap...you ever stopped to look at the price of just the crank for the 427??? like $2500 crank only...then the pistons, rods, Heads, Cam...massive machine work....the 20K range you see is also coming form the optioned C5R block($6500-7500 bare block)
Yes, the sleeving process has improvedd over the years. supposedly Dartons new sleeved blocks are supposed to really kick some *** in the near future....but it all takes time to see what does and doesnt work and what can and cant handle the abuse given to them on the strip/track.....just ask JPR....they thought it'd be just that easy to "throw a motor together"
It is in a way apples to orages.....but there is one thing you must always remember....you have to pay to play, and some guys just pay a little extra for a few more minutes of recess!!!

Actually, the $20K price tag isn't just the engine itself for that price. That price range is more like a complete package deal, including things like:
Longtube headers ($1000-1200)
crank pulley and belts ($220)
custom computer tuning ($500)
catback exhaust system ($650-700)
Installation labor charges ($2000?)
Clutch or converter upgrades ($750)
Engine assembly, machining, balancing (these aren't off-the-shelf parts)
etc... typically a forged internal 427ci engine by itself, with ported heads and your choice of cam, are around $13-14K. You just need all of that stuff above to handle the power and also to make the most power with the setup.
You can opt for a cast crank (Eagle brand) and save about $1500, and go with an iron 6.0L block and save another $1500. That would get you a 408ci setup for around $10K (longblock)
My previous 434ci LS6 pulled down 525 rwhp, ran mid-10s with no weight removed from the car, and still managed 26 mpg on the highway. It was worth the money!
