Default Throbbing from rear end?

Hello all,

I'm not sure if this is a throbbing or a howl... possibly both? The 'throb' frequency increases with the speed of the car. It's quiet enough that music can drown it out, but loud enough to be heard over the road noise.

I did a search, and I know the standard opinion is that it's a bearing, but I was wondering, what is the possibility it's a U-joint?

Also, should I get the whole GM Rebuild kit from the WS6Store? Or the motive installation kit?

Thanks

When my 2000 made the [presumptively] similar noise, it ended up being the spider gears in the Torsen itself. I hope for your sake it's just a bearing

I'm not even sure if I have a Torsen or an Auburn diff... and of course there's no way for me to tell without pulling the cover off.

Assuming I do have a Torsen, is there a way to test if it's the bearings or the spiders gears? Or do I just have to throw parts at it?

02 would have Torsen,so no spiders.
Is the noise 'in time' with tire rotation OR about 3 times more frequent than tire rotation.
'In time' with tire rotation would indicate carrier or axle bearings.
'In time' with 3 times more frequent than tire rotation would indicate pinion bearing(s) or possibly u-joint(doubtful but possible).

Mine did this when I first got it. I found that there was some slight rust build up on the boss of one of the rear hubs and it didn't allow the rear wheel to seat correctly on the hub. After I cleaned the rust off & made sure the wheel was on hub correctly the noise went away.

idaho, you just may be right. it is rather difficult to get the wheels on the rear on and off (takes a really solid yank to remove them)

I'll pull them off this weekend and take a wire wheel to the hub and see if that fixes it.

I'm using "spider gears" in the context that it's a mess of interlocking "stuff" rather than the clutch packs in an Auburn.

I had same kind of howl noise since had car for over 2 yrs now. I had both wheel bearings n rear replaced and axle on driver side. I think it might be ujoint also because all rusted nd was hard to get out with clutch. I should take tires off and see if the rust issue is problem. my 10 bolt is pretty rusted.
