Is the car a manual or automatic? Is it new to you or have you had it awhile?

Manual has a button to release key on the ignition, automatic has to have Park completely engaged or it won't let the key out. Not sure if that's your problem or not.

Push up on the steering wheel and move it back and forth while turning the key back and fourth. It may just be getting stuck. You may have to mess with the shifter too, even though it appears to be in park.

Snap the button on your shifter. My auto currently has a sticky button and sometimes I have to either rock the shifter back and forth in park until the button inside fully releases or just push the button in and then let go so it snaps back out.

I just haven't got around to taking the T handle off and looking at the problem. Probably needs a little lubrication. Don't screw with your key cylinder lock before looking at the shift handle to make sure the problem is not there.

To elaborate a little more, if fiddling with the T handle button doesn't get you anywhere you can remove the T handle. Put the car in neutral so the shifter is sticking up in the center, look for a recessed piece, it is a U shaped staple like retainer clip. Pry it out with a small screwdriver or other type tool and the T handle should be able to be pulled up and off.

Then you will see that there is a plastic button coming up vertically in the center of the shifter rod. The T handle button you push in to shift actually is pushing this button down.

I think that the button in the center of the shifter rod may not be popping up all the way or the inside of your handle is messed up. Look into this first because it is really easy to do yourself, screwing with the key cylinder is not.
