Question A few quick Cam questions

First, I want to know if there is a cam I can put on without having to change a whole bunch of other internal engine parts. I don't feel like dishing the 1k+ for the heads. Also..would I HAVE to replace the valve springs?

If I can change the cam without all that other crap what kind of cams can I get and how much is that going to cost me? If I take it to a shop to install what would the price to have it installed roughly be?

Any help would be major appreciated

( I got 200+ dollars of credit to use at ramchargers left so I am toying with a doable cam )

I just didn't read anything about what kinds you can hook up to stock or if you can. Maybe I overread it..but I didn't really see the exact answers to my questions..besides, it's nice to make you ls1 motorheads have to type

"Can a cam be your first mod; yes. Should a cam be your first mod; no." You certainly don't have to change any of the internals, though your reference to heads makes me wonder what exactly you were asking.

Also..would I HAVE to replace the valve springs?
"For any cam swap you MUST change out valve springs."

If I can change the cam without all that other crap what kind of cams can I get and how much is that going to cost me?
"If you want to be a lazy **** and not do your own research to find the cam that best suits your application you can just pick up a tr224 114 cam which is the quintessential all around great daily driver cam." Most LS1 cam kits run between $500 and $800.

If I take it to a shop to install what would the price to have it installed roughly be?
Take that $500 to $800 and make it around $700 to $1,500, depending on where you go and the tuning you're doing. That's an off-the-top-of-my-head very rough estimate.

Everything in bold print comes from the link in JRP's signature.

Sorry, no offense intended. Just pointing out some of the info that was buried in there...

Asking questions is the very definition of research! A quick search or two in the internal engine forum might get you more information on what cams would work best with your particular setup.

The minimum you should do is a cam and springs.

However, while your in there is good to change the oil pump, timing set, retainers, and push rods, but it's not necessary.

Yes, you can get a Comp Cam cam. 1200-6000 RPM.
Lift: .522/.529 Dur@.050: 212/218 LSA: 114. With this cam you can run your existing stock parts. I'm looking to install the sam cam next week.
