Default whats the most bang for your buck?

i just got a 1998 6 speed z28. The car has corsa exuast, b&m shifter, and k&n intake(thats it). I want to make it loud and fast w/o possibly damaging the car. What mods should i look into, and what should i steer clear of??

there are a few really good performance shops in your area, you should get in contact with them and have them steer you the right direction.but i would get Lts and ory as a first mod,in fact, those will be my first mods.

long tube headers and off road y-pipe. Usually between $400 and $1300 depending on brand (not including shop installation)

long tube headers (lt's) and an off road y-pipe (ory), the ory can run you and few hundred dollars and the lt's can run u as much as almost $1000, but is money well spent. You can also think of an exhaust cutout, this will more than likely make it louder and give you better performance. the cutout will bypass the muffler to increase horsepower and give you a deep and throaty rumble

LT headers and a Cam.. Your talking about going from a low 13 high 12 to possibly dipping into the 11's if you go with the right combo.

PM BigBronco, a Mod in the street racing forum. He could help you, being from H Town and all. Also jrp, another board member, has great suggestions in his sig with links. Research should be your main occupation before mods. Decide what you want to do with your car and what you want out of it. Don't just go with whatever everyone else is running/ suggests.

You're gonna get the typical responses with a very openly worded post like this. Search (button is your friend) this subject and you'll get hundreds of threads.
Free Mods
Lid (since you don't already have it)
Ported/ Bypassed TB
Headers
Cutout

Thanks for the tips, just looking for suggestions. I would never go out and mod my car without research, not dumb. But this website could give me many ideas. I want feedback on mods. Keep posting guys!!

Just don't like reading threads where guys do mods and end up with a problem from lack of research. Happy modding!

I really like the sound of my car. It has Corsa Cat back, PPC long tube headers with 3" y-pipe (not ory, I have cats) and a Hot Cam. Very old-school muscle car sound. And about 1/2 faster in teh 1/4 mile.

There are cheaper ways to go than PPC, but they are HIGH quality headers. The best ones for fit, install, performance & clearance are all expensive (QTPs, PPCs, Kooks, FLPs). But you usually get what you pay for with mods. There are cheaper ones that perform OK like PaceSetter & SLP, but they usualy have fitment issues, especially if your car is lowered.

And the GM Hot Cam is a VERY nice sounding cam, with good performance, for a reasonable price. As for running 11s with those few mods, maybe in Texas, but not many other places can you do that with a cam only car. Check out the SDPC & PPC & Kooks etc sponsor sites. Good luck & have fun!

I would as well go with some LT's and a new y-pipe. Make sure you at least get coated ones, if not then stainless. It's pretty damn humid and wet in Houston, and even if you don't drive your car in the rain, non-stainless headers will almost certainly rust. I live in a dry part of New Mexico and I even went with stainless Kooks. And don't forget to spend tons of time researching first like everyone else has said.

n2o hands down. can't beat an additional 150 rwhp 180+ rwtq for around 600 bucks, (cheaper if you can find a used kit in the for sale section).

but for now, id suggest these for now

Lid ...any of them, they are all the same
Long tube headers...pcik which set fits your budget. i made 341 rwhp/351 rwtq on a 98 z28 with uncoated pacesetters, ory, hooker catback, lid and cut out, untuned. so someone please tell me how these dont make the power...and i've had them since november and i do have some surface rust, but that is to be expected.

off road ypipe...it seems no matter which you choose, these stupid things bang the **** out of the bottom of the car. Check in the external engine section and find some ideas to limit or fix this issue...(ie poly motor mounts, heater hose etc)

catback...again, choose to fit your budget and know what kind of sound you are looking for. LS1sounds.com is your friend there!

after that, id either get a cam, or put the car on the bottle. me personally, im going with both

Best of luck man!

Like most of the others said, LTs and ORY pipe would be a damn good combo. Some 4.10 gears would also be good on a 6 speed. Look up Horse Power Engineering (HPE) there in Houston they do good work.
