Mobil 1 15w-50 Performance Driving Formula???
Hi Guys,
I do have a question.
Anybody use this Mobil 1 15W-50 Performance Driving Formula or I should stick to 10W-30.
I live in Las Vegas and during the summer it is over 100F here.
I think I also have a noisy valve train too.
Will the performance suffer???
The ride is a 2002 WS6 M6 with 36000 miles on it.
(SLP long tubes, no cats, cutout, Predator custom tune )
I NEED OPINIONS PLEASE
Tommy

Well I would reccomend trying M1 0w40, after a few people told me to try Mobil 1 0W40 I finaly swtiched from my M1 5W30. I'm very satisfied and have much less oil consumption. With the 5W30 I was having to add oil almost every week (esspecially if I sprayed alot). It's been 3 weeks since I switched and the car hasn't used a drop. Suposedly the 0W40 doesn't thin out like the 5W30 &10W30 when the oil temps start to get really hot. I'm sure Patman (our local oil guru) will chime in and give all the specifics.

definately stick with 10/30. i started to say 5/30 but since you are in LV 10/30 is better. If you are looking for performance from oil put in some royal purple, i hear its good for a few HP.

I've run 15W-50 Mobil 1 in my 94 since new. But this car had an oil pressure problem when cornering under hard accelleration. I asked one of the GM Engineers at one of our autocrosses and he said 15W-50 was fine for the 94. I also own a 2001 Z28 and I've read that the LS1 has tighter clearances, so I stuck with 10W-30 in this car. However, the last oil change I went to 0W-40 because I live in Phoenix. Seems to work fine.

15w50 is too thick, you'll simply lose horsepower and MPG with no benefits in engine longevity. You're better off going with 0w40 if you want to use Mobil 1.
No matter what oil you choose, I highly recommend getting an oil analysis done to see if you've chosen the right oil for your car. Every situation can be slightly different. A lot of it depends on the types of oil temperatures you run too.

I pretty much agree with Patman's comments except for the fact that the M1 15W-50 is a highly friction modified oil. I very seriously doubt you would notice any power or MPG loss using it in your climate. A colder climate I would say maybe. Considering that there are better oils out there for the LS1. It seems the LS1's show the best wear numbers with a thick 30W to mid 40W viscosity oil. Good choices would be German Castrol 0W-30, M1 0W-30 or 5W-40, Amsoil's 5W @ 10W-30 oils. My last oil analysis I mixed 4qts of 10W-30 along with 2 1/4qts 15W-40 and my wear numbers were lower than with the previous straight 10W-30 fills. For summer I currently filled with straight 15W-40 and will see how it does on the next analysis. If your wanting to stick with Mobil1 mix a blend of 4qts 10W-30 and 2 1/4 qts 15W-50, this mix will result in a thick 30W oil with a good additive package.
PS I use Schaeffer PAO Blend Synthetic Oil in my LS1

thicker oil hurt hp and mpg in all cases. the reason that royal purple makes more power is that is a thin oil like many other synthetics. thicker oil = more friction, more fiction = less power and mpg. I've never had a consumption with mobil 1 5w-30 so thats what I'm running now. Mobil 1 5w-30 is what comes from the factory in Corvettes. Most dealerships put either mobil 1 5w-30 or mobil 1 10w-30 in when they do oil changes.
