Question Going to the track with street tires???

I'm planing to go to the local track just to see how "we" doing.
Well I only have street tires and no money for drag radials now.
So how can I get some traction. When I nail it on the streets I spin thru the first gear and still go sideways in second (did not go faster yet)
I just raise the rpm around 1100 and just drop the cluch. If I raise the rpm higher I just can't go couse it just sits and spinning does not move at all. I guess my Nittos can't handle the power. (look at my sig)
Shall I lower the tire pressure for more traction and HOW SHOULD I LAUNCH???
Only street races behind me never went to the track.

Temperature is around 70F here at 2000 feet elevation (Las Vegas)
I have Nitto 555 on the beast at 30 psi cold.

Need some advice Guys

Tommy

I would just experiment until you get something to work for you. I got my best 60' off of the tires in my sig by dumping at around 2500rpm and spinning until around 30mph. Why it worked I don't know, but it just did, I just really need to get myself some traction.

Yup. You're going to have to find out how to drive your car on the tires you have. Pretty much dont go wot until you get traction, then experiment to find the breaking limits of your tires.

Question

Just curious, is traction more of a problem at the track than on the street?

Since I don't wear a helmet, nor drive with my windows up on the street, launching seems to be more of problem for me at the track.

I mean all things being equal, if you were to use the same launch technique on the street that you use at the track, is the track more slippery?

I've never been to a track, so I honestly have no idea.

The track should give you better traction....mayb not much but a bit of it....i would say lower your PSI jsut a tad...and do that a launch from a dead stop....see how your traction is....then if its that bad try 1/2 throttle and then pick it up a bit...thats the onlyway i can think of you doing this...

good luck

Depends on how the track is prepped. If prepped good you will hook better. Normally you hook better at the track because of the concrete and rubber.

My local track must be prepped like crap. Because I can floor it on the street and just launch, no tire spin at all, not even a squeal. I try that at the track and I just light em up.

when i first started, my track sucked at prep, but i still launched between 1500-2k rpm's and ran like 2.2 60' times and then they did a complete prep after someone leaked oil on the track and i almost dead hooked(maybe i did) and pulled a 1.9 60' out and went from a 13.6 1/4 time to 13.4. But normally i don't get the best traction on the stock RS-A( or whatever the hell they are) oh, and those runs were after 20k miles on em

If your going to the track with street tires, stay out of the water.
Just dry spin them to clean them up & a little heat. Then experment to see how much RPM launch they can take.

bringing your psi down will help
i run 20-22 cold on street tires.
pull consistant 2.0-1.9 60' with a best of 1.86

pull around the water box, and spin'em no more then 2-3 secs to clean off the dirt...
from there you will have to find your sweet spot...
dont worry about the light.... your reaction time does not effect your et time...
so take your time and find your correct launch point... once you found it then work on your reaction time

I ran my T/A the first time at the track with street tires, that was the last time for me....to run street tires that is. The problem is that you will get beat by cars that are slower then your car and it will **** you off. I was getting beat by a friend of mine who owns a 69 Mach1 w/351 and had to hear about it at work on Monday. I charged a set of Nittos on my Capitol one card before the next race. I put 20psi in the Nittos and burned them off real good before I raced the Mach 1 the following weekend. My buddy raced me one time that night and I beat him by a half of car length in the 1/8th mi. He wouldn't line up against me anymore that night or any other night for that matter.

You need tires BAD

Jaberwaki is BRILLIANT!

20 psi in rear tires
Pull around the water box
Do a dry burn out for about 2 seconds

Then I launch at around 2200 to 2400 rpm. I don't sidestep the clutch, I let it out quickly and floor it at the same time. You actually have to slip the clutch a little to get a good launch. I don't want to get too good of launch because I have a 6 speed and I figure I will break the 10 bolt rearend if I get sticky tires and start doing a 5000 rpm clutch dump.

Yes, A drag radial is a good thing. Even better would be to beef up the drivetrain and run on an e/t street type tire. I think I went about things the wrong way with my recent mods. mph increased by a buttload, E/T stayed the same, and 60ft increased by a good .2-.3. This winter 12bolt and a clutch will be installed Along with some other suspension goodies.

But anyways Like it was said before..Pull around the water. Spin em for a second or two..roll into the beams. DO NOT stage off your backtires or you will be laughed. God I love it when people do this. Next is up to you ..have fun and Try all different launching techiniques (That is if you are able to get multiple runs in) Find out how YOUR car launches best.
