Default New member help

IM new to LS1's and just bought a 99 camaro SS with 30k miles. Im looking to do full bolt on's. Like I said i have the ss with the ram air...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...4225637....see a pic there. What mods can I do that will leave the stock look and improve the flow to maximum? Im looking at the SLP air box/lid and SSRA. If I use the ssra do i gotta worry about water(i live in fla)? I also want to slap on a zo6 mass air flow sensor. This leads to my next question.....What manifolds should i use and are they worth the trouble and money? I see some for $350 and others for $900. Please give me ideas on the intake side of the motor. Like 99% of all of you im lookling to do this for the cheapest price and get the most Hp possable.

On the exhaust side I think im going to do Long Tube FloTech Headers with a Flotech ORY and keeping the SS exhaust which can also be seen in the pics at the above address. I think its a SLP Dual- Dual system. Im trying to save a little $ and I hear the SLP Dual-Dual does good.

Any ideas from You guys would be great. Just know that im a 16 year old that wants the most bang for his money. Thanks, Brian Kaiser

Have you been browsing the site long? I would suggest you do alot more reading & searches learn first then spend your money wisely. This place is by far the best source for LS1 info. You will find what will be best for you & what you want, for what you can afford. I only say this cause I see newbe w/1 post, thats whay my advice to you would be read, listen & learn before you buy. Then decide how far your gonna take the car & go from there.

I do have a basic list and I will post that below. What I really need if for knowledgable people to tell me the "little stuff" that I may be leaving out that could affect performance and/or reliability.

Flotech Headers LT w/gaskets,O2 sims and mounting hardware(coated)
$379.99+ship

Flotech Y-pipe(un-coated)
$129.99+ship

85 MM ZO6 Mass Airflow Sensor
$149.99

SLP Flo Pack(Cai,Lid, Bellow, K N filter)
$279.95

TSP "Magic Stick" Cam Kit w/hardened rods and dual springs
$699.99

Any other Advice on parts or parts that I have that should be re-considered please let me know. Thanks, Brian Kaiser

Ls6 intake, and to save money, u might want to rethink the flo pac, and just get a lid and a filter and do the free ram air mod. instead of the sensor, get a ported throttle body. and do something about your shifter. Good luck man.

Just get a lid and a regular old paper filter. I like
Purolator. Lid matters more than the filter does.
Forget the oiled type filters. A used lid works just
as well as a new one, as long as it isn't cracked.

Changing MAFs would want tuning, don't go there.
Even the ones that supposedly are "calibrated" for
F-bodies, are a crap shoot that you had best avoid
until you have the tools.

With the SS hood you are unlikely to see any big gains
from another cold air intake (though, hey, that didn't
stop me either...). I would leave it be.

Headers may also want tuning to be right. The LS6
intake manifold will probably not be a big improvement
until you have the back end breathing right, I would
say leave it until you are doing a cam swap at least.
Check the Chevy High Performance cam/intake test
series, the LS6 intake does not pull away from the LS1
until after they started going up in cam; minor difference
on the stock motor. Take your time, head on out to Bithlo
every couple of weeks and look for wrecked '01-'02 V-8
Camaros or Firebirds you can get the intake off'n, maybe.

On the intake side I would start w/ a lid, air filter and free ram air mod. The Z06 mass air could wait until your ready for a cam and tune. I put one on mine and noticed very little diff., a little more throttle response. But a nitrous kit, cam, long tubes and a torque convertor are in the works. As far as the exhaust side, I would look into the Pacesetter headers, from what I understand they are a much better quality and fit for about the same price, and probably need a tune for the best results with these as well. Now the cat back, I hear Magnaflow and Hooker are good option for around $ 400 or less. That's just my 2 cents. But I would read into the stickys, use the search, and look for a post from jrp w/ links in his sig. Good Luck and enjoy the SS!

Stay away from the FlowTech headers and Y pipe. First of all the headers are shitty. Poor welds, poor coating, just junk. The Y pipe isn't worth 2 *****. I was changing out my pinion seal this weekend and noticed my Y pipe had a huge crack in it. Unfortunatly I had to learn all this the hard way. I would recommend you to save up a bit more and get a better set of headers. Look into the Pacesetters, I've heard they are pretty good, bout the same $$ too.

Thanks for the help. From your posts I will make a revised list. It may still not be good but keep correcting me and I will eventually come up with a list that will work well for the $.

Pacesetter Long Tubes

Pacesetter Y-Pipe

Will i need O2 sims/extensions? Do the pacesetters come with hardware and gaskets?

Lid

un-oiled filter(what brand?)

LS6 intake

TSP "Magic Stick" Cam Kit w/hardened rods and dual springs

I think my car has a SLP dual/dual exhaust. If not i will just keep it and add a e-cutout for cheaper and make it sound cooler.

I WILL be doing the TSP MS3 cam so help me build ad induction/exhaust that will support it.

Thanks, Brian Kaiser

The SLP dual-dual and my SLP CME are both pretty good
cat-backs that are nice and quiet. Maybe too quiet, with
the stock logs and cats, but you may be happy once you
go to headers and maybe an offroad y-pipe. Check the
Texas Speed --> offroad Y pipe - $144 or something like.
They also have Pacesetters on sale, $374 for coated.

Really, once you do everything on your list you will want
tuning. You should probably get that figured out - find a
local HPTuners buddy, or something.

I flow-tested a few paper filters and found Purolator the
best of the cheapos, and not a worthwhile difference
between cheap, expensive and open-lid.

Speaking of lids, inspect your present one. I don't know
about '99s but later SSs had a high flow lid option that
is pretty good, probably good enough not to be worth
changing. If it looks like the one here, says "Blackwing"
on it, that's one more mod you don't have to do. If it
has the stupid extra "pod" on it, though, it must go....

Just a little advise may be to use the TSP ory instead of the pacesetter y, it fits a hell of alot better and is adjustable for clearence. I have the pacesetter lt's and are excellent quality for the money. The slp exhaust flows pretty good and would not waste the money on a cat back now, unless you want it louder than a cut out would work well too. Just my thoughts.

I dont know what i have on the car as i havnt even taken delivery yet. Im just planning this out because going from a 383 LT1 to a stock LS1 is going to feel pretty slow. Maybe more people can check out the engine shot of my car in my first post and see whats up with it. If you were me and had the same car what mods would u guys do before the MS3 cam? I can get a dyno tune around here for about $300. Thanks, Brian Kaiser
