Who has had a chance to drive the 32v 4 cam Zr1? How does it compare in terms of feel to the Ls1 Ls6 or Ls2? I've never had the chance to drive one, but I'd like to.Thanks

I think you mean the LT-5 engine...the ZR-1 Corvette came with more than one engine.
If I remember corretly the LT-5 engine was a joint venture betwwen GM and Lotus.

I used to be a light line Chevy mechanic back in the early 90's and drove many ZR1's now it was many years ago and I've only driven one LS1 powered vehicle been in a couple others though but if memory serves me correctly the LT5 didn't rev as fast it had a little more of a flat/even feel it just PULLED with alot of torque also I may be wrong but wasn't a C4 a pig compared to a C5 weight wise? The LT5 is a great motor but I think the LS1 wins hands down as an overall motor but you should really compare the LT5 to the LS6. Oh and also there was only the LT5 in a ZR1 just different hp ratings by year like the ZO6 of today.

LT-5 Vettes are extremely rare so it is slim to run into one. However, I believe there are stock internal/H/C Lt-5's that run 10's. Very, very good motor. If it wasn't so expensive and huge it would be more popular.

GM bought out Lotus in 1985 and thats when they started to put there heads together about this motor. it took almost two years to develop and was actually hand built at the Mercury Marine in Stillwater, OK. chevrloet had originally planned on a twin turbo v-6 and even thought about a n/a 600 horse v8 but it proved uneconomical. horsepower on the zr-1 was 375-380.

The had a wicked top end too. It varied but the slow ones did over 180mph.
They were soo much fun and if anybody saw one that knew what the hell they were looking at they got CRAZY attention. Too bad when I drove them I was in a shop uniform and could never convince anybody it was mine.

I owned a ZR1 and think that is the best motor to ever come from GM. There are others that make more power but they don't have the power band of the LT5. Stock redline was 7k and that could be raised a lot higher. Power really came on at 5k. The problem with the LT5 was parts were so expensive. Add to that the ZR-1 package was hard to tell from the standard C4 it never really caught on. A little over 6k units were made between 90-95. Compared to the current Z06, the ZR-1 weighed a whole lot more making it slower off the line. The Z06 will win a drag race but look out after that. I think the ultimate racer would be the Z06 with the LT5 in it.

The LT4 only came in a extremely limited amount of 97 SS's. The LT4 came in 96 Corvettes with a 6sp only. It was in every Grand Sport and made specifically for that car. Great motor too! It was underrated by GM at 330hp so as to not out shine the new for 97 LS1. The true rating for that motor was north of 350hp. Go check out LT4.com

The number of SS were around 100. It also came in about 20-25 Firehawks. Notice that the Fbody only got it after the LS1 had debuted in the 97 vette. Those fbodies with it will be high dollar collectibles in the future. Hell, they are that now if you can find one.
