Default Ticking noise

Sometimes when I start up my car I can hear a ticking noise coming from under the hood. It always goes away after a few minutes. It also seems to go away if I rev the engine.
It does it when my car is both cold and when it's warmed up although it seems to do it more often when it's cold.
Is this something I should be concerned about?

its called piston slap, all f-bodies do it when its cold for a minute or two. dont worry about it. very very common minor defect.

i get the "ticking" noise too, i've been told not to worry about it. As you come across other owners, most of them will tell you the same thing.

I still think it is kind of funny that the engine has piston slap, I know my car has it in at least 1 and 5 cylinders. I did not worry about it untill I noticed mine slaps all the time be it cold or warm.

Most likely it's gonna be the oil ring seal between the oil pick up tube and the and the oil pump. Very common in these engines. Do a search on knocking noise and i bet you will find the information very helpful.

It's pretty normal, experiment with different oils to see what minimizes it most. Also, some have had luck with a PCV catch can (helps keep oil out of the intake). Don't rev the car to get rid of the noise, just let it warm up at idle.

Thank you all for your replies. I did a search and found quite a bit of info on piston slap. I wasn't sure if piston slap was a possibility though because my car does it both when it's hot and cold. It only does it maybe 3 or 4 times a week.
I'm using Mobil 1 5w-30 right now. Would going to 10w-30 help?

It could also be a bent pushrod. I had a friend who had a bad ticking sound all the time. If yours goes away after it warms up then it's probably just piston slap but if it does it all the time, you may have to change pushrods.

ive got a ticking noise also, but ive heard that it could be a bent push rod from bouncing off of the rev limiter or missing a shift

Not really. I had the new vette teflon coated short skirt pistons and new ring packs done at a machine shop through GM warranty last May and it is definitely back.

It is in the #1 and #8 cylinders. The block was not bored and resleeved and I am sure that it is those cylinders that are the problem.

The car flys like it should but the slap is embarrassing when I know others are around. But I would not want to part with her!

There is a sound byte on pistonslap.com if you want to know if what you are hearing is PSlap. There is some ticking from the injectors that is common on these cars. That I never worry about. Good luck bro.
