What kind of mileage do you normally get? Do you have an engine light? Does it idle and drive normally?

i've noticed the same thing.....most of my driving is city miles and only put my foot into it every once in a while. I drive it pretty conservatively. I'm getting about 16 miles/gallon, which seems about 2 miles lower than it should be (my friend gets about 18 with his 98Z and he drives the hell out of it). I'm getting the plugs and wires changed next week, I'll let you know if it makes a difference.

Things to check/replace:
* Spark plugs & wires
* Fuel filter
* Air filter
* O2 Sensors (usually the problem)

Other things:
* run some fuel system cleaner (some good dedicated stuff, not just something you just add to the gas -- I cant remember one off hand, ask around.)

More expensive possiblities:
* Injectors
* CATs
* MAF

I was only getting 16.7 mpg with a A4 and 3.73 gear. When i went to dealership they found 2 oxygen sensors were bad. Could this your problem too? Also how many miles on your car?

There are four O2 sensors.
There is one before and after each of the two CATs.

You dont have to go back to the dealership to get some.
You can get Bosch units from any auto parts store.

O2 sensors are the most common cause for bad mileage, studdering, or performance loss.

I also get about 16 with driving mostly around town. I'm just going to change the fuel filter, plugs and new front O2's when I do the exhaust. Hopefully I'll end up with better gas mileage and more power.

i only need to replace the front 2 correct? bc those are the ones that read my lean/rich data. and i will not buy bosch 02 sensors as i have read they are crap..im going with the stock delco or delphi(same company)

what do the back 02 sensor even do?

is it easy to replace O2's on your own? If its pretty simple, I'd be willing to replace those as well in an attempt to get better mileage.

yes easy to replace..just get up in there with a wrench and crank those fuggers off..might want to soak them in PB (or wd40) the night b4 to loosen em.

Easy to replace, unless they are rusted on in which case you will have to fight them. Last time I changed mine I used a small jack to turn the socket and break one of the loose. Daily driving through winter in the salt/rust belt will do that.

You do only need to replace the front two. Most of us with exhaust work only have those two. The rear two are there to monitor the function of your converters. It compares the data from the first and second two to see how much the cats are reducing emissions. Then if your cats go out, it sets and engine light.

FYI: Much better chance the O2's need replacement than your wires.

Couldn't hurt to grab some MSD superconductor's and NGK TR55's though.

ha, thats exactly what I'm getting on friday, a new set of MSD's and NGK's........I guess I'll just see if the plugs make a difference then decide about the O2's......I have 50k on the stock plugs and wires and they are in bad need of replacement anyway.
