Default Learning stick

hey guys, all of my cars i've had all have been autos and lately i've been wanting to buy a manual f-body this time around. What do you guys think about learning stick on a v8? would it be too hard, and how long did it take everybody to be able to control it well? I know it's recommended to start on the smaller engine for bikes and was wondering if the same applies for cars. thanks.

um i don't think these cars are the best to learn on, if you can find someone to teach you on their car go for that , it doesnt take much to learn , but the m6s arnt easy either, hey maybe you can rent a manual? AD you may want to make sure you like a m6 before you're stuck with one, i can drive stick but since i live in ATL , there's noooo way i would use a stick for a daily driver, oh the traffic

It shouldn't be too much of an problem to learn on a powerfull car. I wouldn't choose to, however. I learned on my neighbors Oldmobile Achieva and then got profficient on my buddie's old Civic.

Does anybody you know own a manual? How old are you? I'd seriously consider seeing if you can find a rental car that actually has a stick (good luck) because if you can rent a car for $25 a day to practice on that would be best. No need roasting the clutch on your new F-body, ya know.

Ive owned two cars...my first was an auto 140 hp 1990 Cavalier...my second was my dream...an M6 SS. Ive had little exp. with manual with basiclly the only one I had driven was my mother's 3000Gt 5 spd which was a horrible pain in the ***. When I first test drove my SS, I was scared shitless that I was going to mess up with the clutch and have 330hp worth of snarling fury pointing me into a mailbox or street lamp...but to my surprise it was sooooooo easy to drive. I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Learning stick is easy, I got pretty good at it in about 30 mins. But like everyone else says I wouldnt want to mess up the clutch on a nice new FBody find someone elses car to sacrifice for learning

If that's what you want, GET IT. I got an auto, and while it's fun ( probably going to be even more fun with a 4000 stall ) I wish I had an M6..

i like the heavy clutch on f-body's, it has more feel than the weeny little ones on smaller cars. and you don't have to slip the clutch hardly at all to get the car going, unlike a 100hp civic.

i learned on an '84 rx7, then got my '94 6spd.

You probably picked one of the easiest cars to learn to drive a stick on, these cars have TORQUE and lots of it. You won't even have to touch the gas to get started in 1st just let the clutch out slowly and away you go.
Now to really learn to drive an M6, I'd find a deserted parking lot, and just go practice starting off, in about an hour you'll be doing pretty good, and after a week living with the car and driving it, you'll be just fine.
Mine is the first manual since 87, it took about 15 min to get accustomed to the clutch, then about a week to get totally comfortable with it

It's a very easy car to learn on, I learned on a Lt1 T/A when I was 15(my dads car). I've since owned 2 Lt1 M6's and 2 LS1 M6's. Very easy, they have enough power you really don't need to give it much gas and just release smooth... Nothing to it. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed, You'll have it down in a day or too..... then post back and we'll give you tips on powershifting

I learned on a 5 liter mustang. I think that cars with more horsepower are easier to learn on.

I bought my Trans Am when I was 19 and I had never driven a stick before. My boyfriend at the time actually had to drive it home from the dealership for me. I spent that entire first night driving around in a parking lot practicing taking off and shifting gears. It took me a couple days to really get the hang of it and the hardest part to learn was taking off on an uphill slope without rolling backwards.

I would say you are probably an exceptional student- no offense. I can see where you could learn to use a clutch in 30 minutes but to be good at it in 30 minutes? For most people it will require considerable practice to be 'good' at it. It will take more skill when driving in heavy traffic (finding the right gear), or when you are stopped on a steep hill waiting for the light to change, or in panic stituations. But I agree, getting the feel for a clutch doesn't take that long.

I learned on my ex 1988 Mustang GT vert. That bitch had 2.73s in the rear, AND I live on a hill. It took a while, but I learned how to drive a stick in about a week.
