Default 98-99 and 00-02 LS1 diffrences?

I heard there I a difference in throttle reponses between the 98-99 LS1 and the 00-02 LS1’s what changes have they made, and can I do it to my LS1?

98s had 28.8# injectors, more aggressive spark tables, highly sensitive knock sensors, perimeter bolt valve covers...
99 - 00 had 26.4# injectors, center bolt valve covers...
01 - 02 had 28.6# injectors, less aggressive spark tables, ls6 intake, no egr, different head castings, slightly higher flowing exhaust manifolds, some received the ls6 engine block...

I know there is a lot more, this was just off the top of my head. If you do not have an 01 or 02, I would recommend getting the ls6 intake.

will it make a big difference?how much does a used one usually go for?

no - they are all great engines - they are just tuned differently

"Worst" is a relative term. Mine put down 318/328 with just a lid and filter at 94k miles. That was with stock programming, ls1 intake, and stock exhaust. The only worthwhile factory mod made to the later models was the ls6 intake. Search the for sale threads, they come up all the time.

DAMN so my engine have 130k miles on it factory setup with just a lid and bellow+filter would put down 318?!

Every engine is different. For that matter, so is every dyno. I just gave you my example to show that the "worst" ls1 isn't so bad. Take yours to a dyno and see what it does, you might be surprised...

actually guys, there's supposedly quite a bit different between just the blocks of the 97-early 99 and the mid 99-02. i was flipping through one of my friend's old (may 05) issues of HOT ROD and they had a neat story on ls1 blocks. they talked about all the ground breaking features of the ls1 and how it evolved over the first few years. i was thoroughly shocked because all i hear on this forum is how all ls1's are pretty much the same. well apparently "casting improvements implemented in late 98 increased the strength of these aluminum blocks a considerable amount", and "the first versions had two holes in the back of the block (that weren't big enough) for the pressurized oil coming from the oil filter... making them more susceptible to starving the passenger side lifter galley of oil. This was changed to a large open area". at first i thought these guys were full of sh*t but then i turned the page and saw a 98 ls1 sitting right next to an ls6 and i could see exactly what they were talkin about.

How would you find out if you had the ls6 block? What are the advantages of it?

ya is there a site with modern cast numbers on it and gives info on it, also where would the casting numbers be.....probably in an impossible place to see.

Thank U G's99_Hawk u are the only one who i've ever seen even mention something about the 2 holes in the back of the block. Everyone i've asked about this they say change the oil pump. And thats not true. And the early ls1's could only handle so much HP.

97-99s have poor oil return and when the rev limiter is raised they like to spin bearings

00-03s have good oil return and when the rev limiter is raised they like to throw rods

i looked through that HOT ROD articles also and i convinced my friend that he wanted an 00 Z28 over a 98-99 SS because of the interior being black in the later one and also becuase he wants to massivly cam it to get the 00 so his motor will last longer

how do i know my LS1 has the oil problems described, and how should i fix it....would it make a diff.?

Don't worry about it. There are many high mile 98-99's with lots of power, that have lasted a long long time. Any year LS1 is a well built motor and should treat you right, if you treat it right.
