I agree. Don't even bother with a cam if your not gonna get a stall. I had a A4 car before my current M6. I had a TCI SSF3500 with bolt ons and it was awesome. Once I had the cam, TSP 225, I would have been even happier with a bigger stall.
Point here being that there is good reason and great results to be had by just getting a stall with the stock camshaft...so I would NEVER get a larger cam with the stock stall. Now it can be done, and has been, and not saying that it wouldn't work, but your results would be far from optimum.
The actual size trans cooler that I used I am not sure. It was a B&M cooler, and I know it was in the 20k+ range. I am thinking 26-28k GVW rating. I would have to go back through my old posts and see.....
With all this being said, I would get a 3500 stall at min, and a good tranny cooler to go with it. With this stall you can run a mid 220 duration cam with good results. Also the 224ish cams are great for streetability too, so you can't lose with this combo IMHO.
Anymore questions or just have input on what cam size you actually had in mind, goals for the car, etc, just hollar back and I will be glad to help you out, as will other members of tech I am sure.

A higher stall converter won't ruin your trans unless you get a cheap one. A TC is a better mod as it only multiplies torque when you need it and is locked up on the highway. More performance and you keep the MPG most of the time!
If you are afriad of ruining your car WHY EVEN MOD YOUR CAR in the first place? You are going to break parts if you mod. That is part of the game.

Just like they said, CONVERTER BEFORE CAM. Trust us.
It's not just that the converter provides more performance than a cam, but a cams higher idle speed and raised powerband just don't work well with the stock converter.

I wondered how long it would be until someone brought that up. I suppose we can give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he just likes lope, and that he does not want the cam just to 'sound fast'.

I had a big cam on a stock converter and it SUCKED!!!. The drivabilty is freaking horriable. In order for the engine to idle with a aftermarket cam the idle speed will need to be bunped up. Once that happens that stock TC is going to want to move the car. You will be pushing the break peddle to the floor to keep the car stopped while in D and fighting to stop it while coming to a traffic light. Get the converter first no question about! You will be sick of driving the car after a week fighting the stock TC and a big cam.

From experiance a cam w/the stock converter is not fun, and it definatly 'sounds fast' but didnt help me out too much. I've been running a TR224 on the stock converter for almost a year and although i've gotten used to it the drivability is bad, especially now its cold, i have to let the car idle for at least a few mins before i can put it in gear w/out it dying, and a warm start (turning it off, going to walmart or something then coming back out) is jusut as bad ESPECIALLY if your exhaust is more restrictive than a bullet (the difference between switching gears w/the cut out open, as apposed to the bullet is suprising to say the least) Power wise doesnt help much either w/the stock converter, it wants to go w/my foot on the brake and really didnt feel that much faster. It put down ok numbers for an auto w/just a cam and headers w/stock ls1 intake and all the other crap, but if you just like the sound and can live with the drivability then go for it. I guess a good part is w/the cut out open my car scares off most potential races, but once i do, the bite isnt as bad as its bark.

I just had a big TTP V.3 cam put in my car, stock stall. It sounds mean, but it really is a pain in the a** to drive. Just on the ride back from the shop I got sick of it.

Spend $50 and get a trans cooler and put in a looser converter before you do a cam swap. You will need a looser converter to get the engine in the powerband of the cam so if you do the converter first you will be more than 1/2 way there.

Well, you can go ahead and do the cam, and have it sound cool, and the car will STILL be a dog around town b/c the drivability is such **** you'll spend all day driving AROUND the cam, not INTO the cam(read:into its powerbands).
So, you really need to get a stall first. I'd run a 3200 with a TR224, or the Thunder CheaTR cam. Either one will give you great results.
