Lightbulb Looking at getting into my first C5, hows this one?

So, I've been looking for an affordable C5 for quite awhile. I've been wanting a FRC (hardtop fixed roof coupe) as thats one of my favorite cars. I had a couple in my area that have slipped through my fingers. The link posted below is a coupe I'm considering buying now. It is a high mileage car but looks good for the price.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1333943

I'm trying to weigh the good and the bad to base my choice on.

+ it has the mods and most of the power I am looking for (413rwhp/394rwtq)
+ manual transmission
- 104k miles
- Still has the original clutch
- has ugly stock wagon wheels
- need speakers replaced
+/- not the hardtop I've been wanting, but I like the fact that it has a removable roof.
+/- Not my first choice of color (NBM) I like how its different and rare but dont know if I would love it or hate it.
+/- Seller asking $17k

What do you guys think?

Not bad.

For what it's worth a co-worker in Atlanta bought a '97 C5 A4 with 103k miles stock for 14.5k

17k isn't a bad price, but you can find 20k less miles for the same price. Nice car though, I don't see any problem with it and the price isn't too bad when you figure in the mods.

Those cars have a lot of electronics, you need to know somebody with diagnostic equipment or ownership can get costly in a hurry.

yea, my whole thing is, I love my camaro alot but have been wanting a Corvette for a long time. I just dont want to jump into something and then regret my decision by not getting a FRC or something with lower mileage. The pictures suck so maybe it will look better in person.

There's plenty out there and you still havn't sold your 'camaro yet.

This isn't some "hot deal" that you have to act now on. There are deals like that all day long based on miles/mods/price.

Get the car you want, unless something unexpected comes along that makes you move towards it.

Pass on it. Buy a stock car and do with it what you want. Hold out for the FRC.

I'd never buy a 100K car that was making that kind of power. I'd buy a stock car with 100K though.

I'm pretty set on buying a pre-moded car as I wont have the funds to build something for awhile if I went stock. This one in particular has not had the mods on the car for longer than a few months.

What kind of times do you think the car would run?

these cars were meant to be driven hard. somebody might have used it for what it was meant for... so?

besides - i thought the general philosophy around here was: if something breaks - just throw something better on it instead.

The motor was probably recently put through the process of the build up.

Thats not what I would worry about.

Thats still 104k miles on the rest of the car. Enterior (I bet the driver's seat has a permanent indention), suspension, etc.

I'm not saying its a bad car but for the money I could get one that has alot less on it.

as a former vehicle inspector, i've driven a lot of vettes. one thing i've noticed is once they get some miles on 'em the interiors age fast, creeks and rattles, loose buttons, etc. i wouldn't say don't buy it, cause i'm about to buy a camaro with 125K on it with mods, but i wouldn't pay that much. if you are in no hurry just hold out for the one you want and a better deal.

I think this is a much better deal. The car appears to be pristene.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1412402

If I can get the price down to around $20k, would this be a reasonable deal? Also, I was told the 918 springs on that cam would lead to alot of trouble and there should be 921's in there?
