im with swift on the being confused part. a few people on here said that you have to have over 500hp for 6th gear to do anything. but my (completely stock) car tops out at 157 in 5th. so is there another 5-7mph in 6th?

The previous owner must have done just that then, it still has the ses light because of the fact that it had the cats deleted when I bought it, so I don't think it has been dyno tuned, but it may have been tuned with a handheld. I hope not though, cuz if it has been I may be not be able to get into it to dyno tune it huh?

 

Yeah man, I am pretty damn sure that the previous owner didn't do anything to my car other than a chokemaster muffler and a cutout. I have had the car up to 153 or so before, and it didn't show any signs of slowing down.

Yup, and I am still getting replies. I guess these threads never die. Upon further examination however, I have noticed that the speed rating from the factory for my tires was 245/50/ZR16, so that is probably why it will go that fast. I didn't know it was 160ish though, I always thought it was 155 and I had never heard of an ls1 f-body being governed at 115, it seems kinda like a waste of that hp to me.

 

no. 5th gear goes to around 190. 6th goes over 250mph@6000.

 

these cars hit there top speed in 5th? I noticed while watching a video that the new Z06s hit 198 in 5th!! So what happens when you shift into 6th? It does'nt have the power to pull any faster because of wind resistance

yup. engine has to work harder in 6th because of the gear size and it just cant do it, unless you have a lot of power. like someone said above that you need 500. 6th gear is overdrive - purely for mpg, not speed.

 

ah I see. If you had different gearing like 410s would 6th gear come into play to reach top speed or would you still stop in 5th? I doubt I'll ever have the ***** to try topping my car out, this stuff is just cool to know

 

I can't believe you guys top out your cars on public roads! I've never gone over 110mph on public roads and don't plan to.

But the top speed question, I think would be greatly effected by head winds, elevation, slope of the road you're on (may look up or down hill but could be the opposite), and the temp outside. With no governor and all aspects favoring you, I'm sure a stock f-body would push 165+ and then some with a SSRA or FTRA.

 

I have an A4 T/A with 2.73s and mine did 170MPH at the top of 3rd, but this was on the dyno. Lol all you crazy teenagers driving fast. My buddies '02 35th SS did 160+ on the street, so that's def possible.

 

In our cars 5th gear is is an overdrive too just not at extreme. 5th is .75:1 and 6th is .50:1 which is a huge overdrive not made for top speed. I have 3.73's and make about 430 to the wheels and I can push 5th gear out and I cant push 6th gear....

 

My predator shows my speed limiter to be set at 160 from the factory and I really have no need to change it if you doing 150+ on mich roads in the winter your a retard and are prob going to die at a very young age

 

My car ran a speed limited 162 on the speedo, I recentlyl ran 174.6 (GPS) with two chicks in the car and I was still pulling but the passengers had enough, the wind noise is intimidating,,,,



180+ will fall and I'll go from there till hopefully +/- 200. It rides stable with the stranos/konis/sways/panhard so if I have enough HP it will happen..........Fun white knuckle **** baby.

Did a 150-160mph blast with a c-5 a couple days after christmas with virtually nobody on the road foor a bout 3 1/2 minutes between Western Boulevard and Apex it ways great fun but the best is always when you break off with no blues.........

 

I agree. The stock speed limiter on our cars is 167 MPH...

 

theres a post of hp tuners saying 160 and my predator says the stock tune is limited to 160 but you still say its 167?
