agreed with the search, this topic comes up every year a numerous times. Start the ****** up let the idle drop down, minute or two, and drive normally until it's at operating temps.

I start the car,do a search on and read all the LS1tech.com posts about warming it up. Pour gas in the tank, prime the fuel-pump, RE-start the car, and drive off.

Start it, play with radio for 15 seconds, put it in D and be very nice to it.

Fire it up, floor it against the limiter, sidestep the clutch in second to heat the tires, then hammer it up to 160 mph. Should be at operating temp.

I usually wait "at least" until it idles down and always baby it until it is at or very near normal temp. Car has about 51000 miles and has the "LS1 ballpeen quartet" playing on very cold mornings.

If the guage reads 150 or less I try to keep it under 3 k, once past 150 I'll ease to 4k on the tach. Always full op temp before going WOT. At 97,000 miles now.

I don't know about the search because you will just find the same bad info and debate.

I think an inteligent discusion uses data.

So I will start, What do you mean by cold? 40*, 32*, 0*, -10*, -50* each one of these temps would require a different plan.

In general I park my car in December and don't drive it untill March. This works the best!

no its more of a "where your temp gauge needle sits" that your concerned with, I usually let it sit idling for 1 min, drive with shifts below 2500, get it up to full op temp(run temp on the gauge) and then give it a further 10 mins before any craziness can happen(4k+ shifts). The colder the temp, the longer it will take to warm(obv). I know in the previous M5s(E39) the engine would up the rev limiter as the engine got warmer, but even at its coldest the engine would still allow you to shift around 4000 anyways, I go lower as a precaution and since the car isnt driven a lot(1000mi/yr)

^^^^^^ The best parts are "Should be at operating temp" & the "LS1 ballpeen quartet" (but it really should be "octet", or something like that, right?)

Good catch! It only becomes a quartet if you follow my first instructions.

Hm, a 98 you say? Well that makes a huge difference. C'mon now, its like any car really..just let it warm up and don't gun it right away, atleast until its gotten to operating temp. Just take it easy.

Well my g/f and I have one vehical between the two of us. My T/A and a Tahoe for her.

Durring this winter I was forced to use the T/A most of the time.
I've started the car WITHOUT being plugged, out in the bare driveway in temps as cold as -40C. (Canadain here and that's also -40F btw))
Leather is rather cold and unwelcoming at that temp so I let the car warm up 20 minutes before I head to work.

Now that its not so cold out (its -15C lately) I let the car run for 10 minutes before heading to work.

I don't dream about moving the car if the temp gauge hasn't passed the first set of numbers.

About 3-4 minutes. That is about how long it takes for my cam to settle down a bit as well. Use the search next time.
