Default What thermostat to get?

Ive seen alot of people running 160 tstats and was wondering if thats the one to have. Also where is the best place to get them from? Summit and Jegs want like 50 bucks for any ls1 thermostat.

Keep the stock thermostat and just fix your fan settings.
Unless you are running a whole lot of compression or
boost anyway, where you might need a cooler water
jacket. A NA car of normal configuration doesn't need
cooler water, it only needs more radiator airflow.

I replaced my stocker with a Hypertech 160* stat. I bought it used so I don't know how much it was new. I like the idea of my car running cooler, and there isn't any definate data otherwise. Of course you have to get your fans reprogrammed, when you put in a different stat. My car consistantly ran at 180*, I had a 98 so my gauge was accurate.

I have a 160 stat, I don't buy into the idea of the engine wanting to run hot. A cooler car is a faster car.

I dont mean "over heating hot".

Normal tempertaure range is what i meant(190-210)

My stock 99 guages are dummy guages that run a normal operational temperature of 210 degrees, I hooked it up to my vehicle live data read out and was showing a 193 cruising on the highway.

LS1 is an aluminum motor so it has more quench then standard iron blocked motors. Metal expands when heated, which is described as "quench". Aluminum is a fantastic heat conductor.

what is acieved by having more "quench?" smaller combustion chamber=higher compression? sorry for the newbie questions...

Not necessarilly.

I think quench is usually taken in to consideration when discussin bearing clearances, torque specs, cylinder heads and gaskets, things like that.

That is not true.

A cooler intake air charge makes a faster car, not a cooler coolant temp, unless you have a specific need for a cooler engine, as stated by jimmyblue:

Good advice.

Not with a stock stat.

I run the stock stat and have the fans cycling my temps between 195-210. That seems to work best.

When I had my car tuned after the cam install he set my fans to come on at around 180-185 degrees, and that what was recommended.

Thats perfect.

Dont touch the thermostat, leave it alone.

98's were the ONLY model to have accurate temperature gauges.

Dont waste money with a 160 thermo please, take a girl out to dinner instead.

i was told from mike haddad that since lt-1 are iron block, its best to get a 160 thermo stat for em. but for ls-1 he recommends leaving it stock

160 is a waste of money for either motors, once you get a 160 degree thermo you must get a tune your fan settings or your motor will run at the same temperature as before.

IMO, put in the 160 degree thermostat, then set radiator fan #1 to 185, then set radiator fan #2 to 195. Done.

In all the time I've had this car, I have NEVER heard the 2nd fan kick on, even in 100 degree weather in traffic.
