Automatic versus Six-Speed (LS1)

Automatic versus Six-Speed (LS1)
Which do you prefer???I am currently looking for a 98-02 Camaro z28 or SS with a M6 for under $12,000,but I have found very few. Most of the M6 Camaros around $9G'S have over 100k miles.I have found plenty of automatics under 80,000 miles for around $9000 or $10,000 and it is tempting but I am not too sure how much fun I would get out of an auto ls1 Camaro. My question is for you automatic owners are you satisfied or do you wish you would have waited and bought a M6(manual)Camaro???

I have an A4. I am really happy I bought it. I hate traffic, which I have to drive through every mourning. And if I had an M6, it would just be that much worse. If you really love bangin gears, then get an M6, but if you don't want the hassle of one in traffic, then an A4 is for you. It all depends what YOU want. Now one more thing, if you thinking about racing then an A4 might be a little better, they are more consistent, and with the right things done to them, they will shift faster. To me, I love the feeling of a nice hard shifting auto.

i was in the same postion, everyone gobbles up the M6's so they are going to be priced higher b/c of there desirablity. rember in racing they may be a bit slower but you will never miss a shift, and i just traded off a manual car for my A4 camaro and i missed gears most of the time, so id say they are about the same in speed considering that, unless u are a really good driver which i was ok but not great, another factor is an M6 is hard on the rearend where the A4 is much nicer, also they have weak stock clutches, so you factor in a broken rearend, replacement clutch, and saving a few grand on the car because its an auto adds up to me to go for the auto, you can get a built automatic that will be solid for about the same cost as getting an M6 with a stout clutch and 12 bolt, and have the assurance of never missing a shift, but other downsides to a automatic are worse gas milage, and the need to stall the converter once you get a cam, there are benifits and cons to either, but in the end its your choice, but the avalibity to get a cleaner nicer car for a better price is an upside just because no1 wants an automatic, so ill take one.

I've owned both and i would say if you want to do alot of drag raceing then the auto is the way to go. But now i have a m6 and it is so much more fun to drive. It can be really quick to drag raceing. But its up to you and what you want to do and like to do.

Yeah,I think I will probably wait for a LS1/M6 to come my way that is in my price/mileage range.I have owned two lt1 camaros both which were six speed and dont think I want to go to automatics and be dissapointed.Just my personal preference.

I like how easy my automatic is to drive, and that I can't miss a shift, but I hate how punching it from 20-55 mph doesn't do squat. Sometimes I think it'd be more fun to be able to pick what gear I want, but that's just me. I think it'll all depend on what you use the car for and what you really prefer.
Though I also hate not being able to throw a rev at a hot girl walking down the street...

the only regret i have about an M6 is the $$$ in drivetrain repairs..if youve got the cash to spare for a 9in or 12 bolt, clutch. Then get the M6, missing a gear isnt the end of the world, just race again. Auto are great for DR, but.........its more fun in a 6spd, you could almost say greater driver skill

I've had both and I always said I wanted to convert this car to a M6. I was ready to take the plunge, but after some serious thought, I couldn't do it. The M6 will always be more fun to drive. My buddy has a '00 SS M6 and he lets me drive it whenever I want. But I get back in my car and it just feels right. It's loud and obnoxious with the 4K stall, but damn it pulls hard, especially down low. I race the 6-speed guys on the highway and they'll get me by one car from ~50 to 110 or so with similar mods. But from a slow roll, they are playing SERIOUS catch-up. A 5 MPH hook is absolutely insane. I know my times aren't the greatest yet, but I have more left it this car. Nitto's won't hold a hard launch, so I'm feathering off the tree and still managed a 12.5. A little more traction and low 12's here I come. I do like the stalled A4 and won't give it up. If I want to row some gears, that's what my buddy is for!
If you think you want a M6, wait for it. Nothing sucks worse then forking out that kind of money and not getting what you want. Good luck with your search.

my personal choice would be a manual if you can drive a standard well. imo they are more reliable and come time to mod the car, there's less tuning involved, and you won't ever have to worry about matching your tqc to you cam to your gears etc

There is only one person who could answer this question and that is you. Some people wouldn't trade their auto for an M6 in a million years. I myself love banging gears. Just make sure you wait until you find the car that you want before you write the check.

For the people that always say the M6 is more fun, I say that is all just a matter of opinion. Last time I drove an M6 LS1 car was back in 2001, and I was happy to get back in my A4 car when the drive was over.

i think i would die of boredom if my car was an auto, it would just feel like driving anything else.
with the six speed you just feel more connected with the car, i think at least. as stated before, do whatever you want to do. asking our opinion is obviously fine, but don't let us make the decision for you.
there's always the worry about blowing a shift, but i think that makes you concentrate that much more.
