Default LS2=Junk?????

Nahhhhh....I don't think so!

Here's the deal fellas (and I'm sorry if this is the wrong section for this), but a friend of mine is interested in buying a LS2 GTO. The reason he decided to get one was because he drove another friends LS1 GTO, and decided if the LS1 is great (he also has a bone stock '01 WS6) the LS2 must be better...right?

Well they guy that has the LS1 goat told him not to get the LS2 GTO because the LS2 is junk...(I don't know his friend so I have no idea if he is a dumbass or not, but it sounds like he is)

Well, this got my friend really nervouse so he stopped by my house the other day to get my opinion. I told him I didn't know that much about the LS2 engines (I'm still trying to figure out my LS1) but from what I have seen they seem to be very strong runners and a good engine.

I would like to get some more detailed info for him from you guys so he can shut his friend up (who I think at this point is just jelouse)

So basically what I'm asking is, what are the similarities between the LS1 and LS2? What are the differences? Are there any big advantages the LS2 has over the LS1? Are there any disadvantages? Is there any difference in the blocks (I'm sorry if that one seem stupid)? etc....

Sorry for the long post, but I'm just trying to learn and help a buddy out. Thanks for any info you guys can share with me!

i'm no expert, and i know even less about goats than F-bods, but the LS2 is basically the same motor, just improved. it's bigger cubes, 6.0 versus 5.7. i believe they have 90mm intake/TB's stock, at least the 'vettes do. it's still a coil-on-plug ignition, still all aluminum, still all hydraulic roller, etc...I dunno if the goats are throttle-by-wire, but the 'vettes are.

they are by far, NOT junk. people are really stupid, they'll try to steer others away from one-uping them, spread disinformation without ever researching the topic, etc...that's why mustangs caught on, Ford said they were good and people listened

long story short, my '00 LS1 SS was rated at 320 HP, a 6.0 GTO is rated at like 400 HP (390?(somewhere in there)). they're stupid fast and well worth the money

I think the main question I had (I was just worried about looking like a complete moron, but I guess that is how we learn) was the difference in the blocks. Are the LS2 and LS1 blocks the same, but just a different bore and stroke to give the LS2 bigger displacement?

The LS2 is 365 Cubic Inches
The LS1 is 346

The LS2 is a 6.0 Liter
The LS1 is a 5.7 Liter

In short LS2>LS1
They make 400hp/400Tq in stock form.
Thats 50-100 more hp then the LS1.
And those heavy GTO's need it.

im interested in the precise differences as well. i think the larger displacement comes from a slightly bigger bore (4.00 vs. 3.90) but both have the same stroke at 3.62. as far as heads, i believe the LS2 has 243 (LS6) heads, and im sure it has a better oil pump, not to mention the LS2 gto's look 10x better than the LS1 gtos IMO.

while the LS2 puts down more power and should be faster than the LS1 gto, he shouldn't be surprised if he gets pulled by LS1 fbods in stock form.

OH...and i believe the LS2 has a 10.9:1 c.r. vs. 10.1:1 which i don't think really would make that much difference but yea

the only big differences between the gen3 and gen4 are the location of all the sensors, different style of knock sensors, electronic 90mm TB, etc. the majority of parts are still interchangeable.

The LS2 is a great motor. One difference though that no one has mentioned, doesnt the ls2 have siamesed cylinders like the old school sbc 400? Not that it makes a difference.

I definitly wouldnt let that stop me as its clearly superior to the ls1. GM wouldnt produce a motor that had issues and I havent heard of any issues with the ls2. Which isnt suprising considering they're using that in the 09 camaro.

And youre comment about the GTO is because they are girths.
Put an LS2 in the same fbody, and bye bye.

So.. most people would agree that anyone on here with a 350Z, or something that isn't American is rice?
I dont think so.
The people on here respect a fast car, and owning a foreign car does not make you rice.
You can rice out a Camaro just as easy as you can a Civic.

Learn to accept certain facts, and most of all, grow up!
That quote is in my sig so people can see how immature he is. And youre not far behind.
Some of you guys get so caught up in this "LS1 owns all crap" you lose touch of reality.
