Grinding noise from the rear - 99 SS
Just looking to see if someone else may have had a similar prob.
Car is all stock M6 99 SS. I just got it recently. If I have the windows closed and the radio off, when I'm driving, I hear what sort of sounds like a caliper with no pad grinding on the rotor. It might be in my head - but it seems like I only hear it when coasting, or decelerating. When I push the throttle - even just a tiny bit - it seems to go away.
It's not the rotors - I checked them today. The wheel bearings also appear to be fine. When it's grinding, if I put on the Ebrake it has no affect. Seems to get louder as I'm getting closer to a complete stop.
Also, noticed a spot of oil on my garage floor in the morning right under the dif - but I don't see anything leaking. Should I pull the cover and make sure everything looks ok? Could it be the gears?
Hope it's nothing crazy, thanks for any help.

on a more serious note...
does it sound like gear whine to you?
it may be a good idea to open up your differential and check for metal shards. at the very last, if you don't find anything wrong in there, at least it's a good opportunity to change your gear oil - always a good thing.
how are your tires wearing? check to see if your tires are wearing evenly. if you find, say, your rear right tire is worn a lot worse than the other three, then you likely have a problem not related to the gears or differential. if all 4 tires are worn evenly, that tells us something else. even/uneven tire wear tells us a lot about your situation.

I will be taking the diff cover off tonight to check it out - guess I'll grab a gasket at lunch time and some oil.
Thanks

Umm there sure is a gasket. RTV will probably work fine but there is a gasket.
Whatever noise you have going on sounds pretty minor. Especially since you only seem to notice it on decel. Mine made some crunchy noises when I bought mine on slow turns and new fluid took care of it.
Don't eliminate the rear brakes as a possibility since the parking brake works on a drum system and doesn't use the regular brake pads. My rear rotors were warped as hell and I couldn't figure out why I wouldn't feel it when using the parking brake.

Ok, changed the diff fluid and no difference. Used synth 80w oil in the rear, with a thing of GM limited slip additive. There were metal shavings on the magnet, but not a grazy amount. Gears themselves looked clean..
And I didn't want to RV the whole thing - Advance auto sells the gaskets for like $4.00. Well worth it..
Any ideas of where I should look next?
thanks

put the *** on jackstands and spin the tires by hand to reproduce the sound. it may be a bearing in the rear end.
also check to see if anything is touching a rotating part of the drivetrain.
