Only helps it run cooler. Depending on your state and weather conditions this could be helpful. I personally just like the cooler temps and feel the oil is treated a little better when the coolant temps are that low.

I went with a 180* because of what is in these threads.

I didn't read all those threads... but you need to have the fans adjusted that will make the thermostat worthwhile. I replaced my 160F stat with a 160F stat (I didn't know the former owner had already replaced the stock stat). I have a used one if you are interested PM me.

i think that having the fans tuned is more important than that low temp thermostat. In combination they are pretty effective. But hell, I live in Wichita, KS where 105 in july and august is pretty common, and with a 15 day string last year over 100 degrees, I never saw my temp guage go over 190 even at an idle in bumper to bumper stand still traffic. With my tuner I verified that at the level on the guage, my car was actually running in the low 190's.
All i have are my fans tuned to come on at 160 and 180 and a stock thermo. I suppose with a 160 or 180 thermo, it would stay even cooler. But be warned that a 160 thermo is a double edged sword. You'll car will take forever to warm up in cold temps...

The reason for a low temp is for predetination or knock that reduces advance, LS1's like advance. If your not running H/C, supercharger......maybe every bolt on that increases advance its overrated. My 2 cents is get a temp gauge and a manual switch for the fans but the computer does a good job. With syn. oil there is no good reason to run cold and a few bad ones.
