Default Is nitrous illegal?

What would happen if I got pulled over with my nitrous bottle hooked up in the car?

depends on the state. some it is the line hooked up and some it is if the bottle is open. If you hide the bottle and have an electric cutout it doesn't matter unless they search your car.

I would say...only if its sprayed into an engine on public streets and a law is broken because of it.

Otherwise, shouldn't aftermarket turbos and sc'ers also be illegal, because they do the same thing as nitrous....add power.

So, do some states allow a full bottle in the car if its closed, but hooked up.

But nitrous is compressed in a bottle that could possibly explode.

Maybe we should start putting large "HAZMAT" stickers on our cars...

Thats true, and they have exploded before, right?

I was actually just thinking about it as a power/speed mod, and its legality.

It is illegal if it is the medical grade N2O. That is considered a controlled substance. In Indiana I can run the car all day long with the bottle hooked up and the valve closed. Once I open the bottle on the street Judas Priest's Breaking the Law comes on the radio for some reason.

you're going to have to find the laws for your state to know for sure... i've read practically all of the auto laws for NC and didn't see anything on nitrous at all.

i asked a city cop and he told me that its not illegal to have it hooked up, but that you just can't use it to break the speed limit.
i would imagine that it wouldn't be hard for a cop to make the case that it was your intention to race or break the speed limit if the bottle was hooked up.

Varies from state to state but all have laws against speeding, so as long as your not leaving too hard from 0-35 your fine.

NC it is legal for RV use.(why I don't know? Possibly help driving in the mountains?) If it's on a car it can be hooked up but nothing in the lines bottle has to be off.

Are you sure? I have a friend who is a patrol officer who told me it is only illegal if the bottle is open on public streets.

Like stated above, each state has different laws concerning whether it can even be in the car. I think Super Chevy or Hot Rod did an article last year that gave a basic synopsis of each state's laws. For some reason, I remember Pennsylvania as being super strict ie. only allowed to have the bottle in the car on the way to/from the track

Its not a federally controlled substance - has too many legal uses. Some states may have age restrictions on purchase. You can certainly get medical grade, I did for some time because that's what the supplier carried. Automotive grade Ny-Trous or whatever the trade name with the sulfur PPM is generally of lower purity and thus cheaper than medical grade, so most nitrous filling places use that.

I ask the FHP guy that lives in my subdivsion and he said it is illegal to have hooked up and is with in the reach of the driver. Said some other stuff too. But hide everything and I guess you won't have to worry about it. Electric bottle opener.

This is exactally why my bottle is in my spare tire compartment with an electric opener, switches in the ashtray. Out of sight, out of mind
