Default Colder than stock spark plugs and their affect on N/A performance discussion....

I'm teetering on whether to stick with TR-6s or go colder because my car rarely sees the bottle, and my decision will be greatly affected by how a colder plug affects N/A performance.

I've been "hearing" that the colder plugs don't last as long, and will rob about 15rwhp or so N/A....

My plan for now is to spray about a 100-150 shot for daily driving (on top of a ~450rwhp heads/cam car), and to up that to a 150-200 shot at the track.

Of course timing will be turned down 2 degrees per 50 shot, and we are running on 91 octane gas out here for daily driving, and I will slap some Torco and 100 octane in the car for the track.

Do I need to go 1 or 2 steps colder plug wise? I'd rather not if it's still safe to use TR-6's.

Another downside of NGK -8's is my idles like poop with them. -8's are three heat ranges colder.

Yes, the colder ngk plugs i run don't last.

Not sure about the N/A power loss, but i don't think it will be that much, maybe 5-7 rwhp. My trap speeds didn't have a noticeable drop while running the -8's

I have run 200 with 4 degrees out on pump gas wth Torco additive (104 octane total) and TR-6's...I am going to get checked on wideband dyno with this set up. I tried -8's, way too cold for 150 shot, ok on 175. I just called NGK and got part number for -7's, so i will pick these up today and bring them with me for the dyno tuning if TR-6's are too hot. Nitrous express and nitro Dave's both said TR-6's are ok for 200 shot.

Stay with the TR6s.There is no reason for anything colder on a 150 shot.

I run a real cold plug, secret stuff tho. however it isnt nec with a small shot. id say run 6's all the time, when you go to the track, pull the timing, put an 8 in the car, race gas, and a bigger shot.
plugs are a snap to do so swap them at the track.
I ran 6's all the time with my near 600 rwhp turbo set up, and it was ok.
cold plug will foul faster, will lose na power, and isnt real good for heat in the cylenders.
also if you run a warmer plug, it will melt befor a pistion so it is insurance that could save a pistion. you use N2O and its not if it will bite you, its when!

i run a BR7EF ngk plug...ive heard of numerous guys on this forum that have melted TR-6's on a regular occasion...maybe it is "insurance" but the plugs i run are great.the only diff that i have experienced, that on a hot day, sometimes when you run the car for a while, when you start the car again;it kinda sputters to life...... thats the only thing for me.NGK and NX told me to run this plug,or a few others....but they said def not TR-6's.

Sounds like the 8 is too cold for daily driving, but either I change to an 8 at the track to run a 200 shot, or I maybe consider running a 7 both on the street and on the track. Hmmmm

i say change it at the track. it will also be good because you will have a nice fresh set of plugs in it just for racing, no worry about a bad plug.
I pull mine after every pass, just to check them and be sure my tuneup hasnt changed.

Plugs are easy to change, but at the track? Do you still have skin on your arms???

Anyone else think that Noyzee's secret comment is hella gay?

Gimp, by the way, I ran some TR8's and they fouled out pretty fast. I am now running some Delco race plugs and even when we have run the car rich the plugs have cleared up, better than the TR8's would. Let me know if you want some part numbers. Got referred to these plugs by Kurt @ W2W. My plugs at gapped at .025 too.

I just checked a couple of my TR-6 after spraying a 200 shot for a full 10 lb bottle. I run 94 sunoco, Torco additive, and pull 4 degrees of timing out. Plugs looked great. I put them in a parts washer to get the brown color off due to the race gas concentrate. Everything looked great under a magnifying glass. I will stick with these for the tuning I think. I bought some -7 NGK's, but when I opened them, I found that the tip is not a projected tip, much more recessed than the -6 or -8. Has anyone used these?

PSJ, it is a top secret plug, im not at liberty to discuss, and if i do the ls1tech boards will fry! oh no, i think i have already said to much!!!! son of a !@%^%

Im telling you now, i do my plugs, 8 of them in 15 min or less, hot, cold, right befor or after a pass. it does not matter. i have 3 tools i use. a 2' extention for all the driver and two front pass sideide plugs, then a 1" extention with a 1 piece universal plug socket. it works mint, then putting the plugs back in i have a chaser thing, and i do not skin hands, or burn myself. like i said the back plug on the pass side is the longest one, so i do it last, by then its cooled a little.
