Default Need to go fast cheaply and safely

Hey everyone, Happy Holidays, I am the proud owner of a 2002 Pontiac Trans am (M6 non WS-6). The car is completely stock except for a borla exhaust that the car came with when I purchased it. I recently went to my local track (Moroso in South FL) and was able to run my car for the first time. I only was able to run twice due to rain but I had a best run of 13.6 @105mph. What do you guys think of that? To get to the main point, I'm addicted to the track now and I want to run faster. As the thread title says I Need to go fast cheaply and safely. Keep in mind this car is a daily driver which I will take to the track once a month or so. I hope to be able to run 11's I have been reading through the forums for a few days now. I see nitrous as my best hope. I'm thinking of a dry kit with a 150 shot. And eventually go with a nice H&C package when more funds are available. I know my stock tires (Eagle GS-C 245-50-R16) won't hold up on that much spray. I dont know if I should go with some street ET's or Drag radials. I also know my rear end wont hold up for too long running on slicks. I want everyone's opinion and suggestion. I am open to all advice.

no such thing as cheep speed. you'll snap your rear end or smoke up your clutch in NO TIME. get the parts to handle the power and then add the power.... you'll be happier in the long run

Well.....I'll start off by saying that if you're short on funds you might wanna hold off. An 11 second M6 car is just ASKING for a busted 10 bolt rear end lol.

If you're gonna go through with it anyways....get a set of Nitto 555R drag radials....they will give you some traction but not be quite as hard on the 10 bolt as slicks.....still though, dont launch in high rpm's.

If you're going to spray 150, you will want it to be a WET SHOT. Also go ahead and get a Walboro (sp?) 255 fuel pump to let that wet shot have some fuel. I know you said you're short on cash right now, but its not much to spend for the added safety. That probably won't get you to your 11 second goal, but it will keep you happy for a while......hope that helped a little! keep us updated!

First of all, your times at the track are typical of a stock T/A. If you don't take care of traction, your times won't be what you want regardless of your power. However, if you want to go N2O, then search the FOR SALE section (or ebay). Dry kits are for sale (cheaply) all the time. Find someone within driving distance and go take a look, before you purchase. Don't go any higher than a 150 shot and MAKE SURE you get a window switch and FPSS, before you run it. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the replies all, I have some follow up questions. Why am I better off with a wet shot of nitrous. Is the upgraded fuel pump really needed? I dont plan on spraying off the line probably just through 2nd and 3rd gears and possibly 4th since I need to shift to 4th down the strip. Is the rear end so weak that it wont take just my nitrous?

The key word in your post is safely. Nitrous will definantly get you there, but it will not be cheap if you do it right. So many pepople think that nitrous is so easy and cheap. Well when you add up the cost of the kit, new injectors, you will have to get in order to not run them at over 100% duty cycle, pump recomended, tune or at least a couple of dyno pulls to test (a must with new injectors). Then there are also nitrous accesories like a purge, heater, and opener that are not necessary, but belive me once you have your kit installed you will miss them if you don't have them. Tires, rear end, bottle refills all add up. What is you definition of cheaply and safely? 1K 2K? PS, I think that you will be on the edge of your goal with the 150 and would not be surprized if you run in the low 12.1-12.2 range, but 11s will be close if not there.

Damn sounds like I'm going to have to come up with more flow. My original plan was to go with the STS rear mount turbo kit. I really like the kit and the shop is a short drive away. But at 4K, it is just too much. The nitrous kits I have seen for the LS1 run much cheaper but then all the extras (rear end, tires, injectors, fuel pump, plus all the little goodies to go with the kit) Also can anyone answer my follow up questions on #6. Please post some opinions ppl. Your experience will help me make my decisions.

The actual nitrous kit is not all that expensive its the stuff you need to see the full potential of it. A good set of sticky tires a dyno tune and a set of plugs would be a start. Not spraying in first will help prolong the life of your rearend but your clutch will start hating you pretty quickly if it is still stock. Nitrous is a blast no doubt but you can have a bad day real quick also. A good wet kit with a dyno tune window switch and fpss would be your best bet. Let me know if I can help.

Used wet kit (TNT, NX or similar) - $400ish
Used window switch (good insurance) - $70ish
TR6s - $15-20
Dyno session - $100-150
Borrow a set of stickies from somebody, make sure you have an 1/8 tank of GOOD gas, take out all unnecessary weight and run until your clutch melts... I don't see 11s unless you have optimum conditions and are a professional driver, but a 150 shot should get you fairly close...
