Default TECH TIP “KEEPING your nitrous supply clean.”

We all know that almost all trash found in your nitrous system came from the refill mother bottle. So here is how to make sure your nitrous always stays as clean as possible.

Always use a nitrous filter on your bottle while filling the nitrous bottle. Most refill places have filters on the inlet side of the pump. That stops trash from hurting the pump. But I am talking about a filter on the inlet side of your bottle; to catch anything that the pump might have missed or put out.
The use of a quality filter is a most. Simple have your refill station fill your bottle though your secondary filter. This other filter, will double the chances of catching any debris that might get into your bottle.

Take your filter and turn its position so that the flow is going into your bottle while filling. Once done turn the filter around so that the flow is coming out of your bottle. (I would recommend this immediately after refilling.) This way you will always keep the dirt on the inlet side of your filter. I know there are some filters that can be burped before turning then around. This is ok if you mfg recommends it. But there should only be a very small amount or trash if ANY that got to your filter. So as long as it’s a large quality filter, you should not have to clean or replace it for a long time.

hey ricky - I have the NX refill station, with the filter. Is their a way to tell if it is dirty, or should I replace it every season or a certain number of bottles

No real way to says how many mother bottles you can put through a nitrous filter. One bottle might be full of rust and the next brand new. YOU can take an NX filter apart. Just take the end off and look inside the canister, If you see some rust partical laying in the canister it is time for a cleaning. That rust in the floor is saying the filter is starting to get clogged or is clogged. We use a bronze stone and it catches a ton of stuff before starting to see any problems. One thing if you notice your pump is not performing, or all the sudden stops moving nitrous for no reason you can almost bet it is the filter.

Ricky,
I bought the NX filter and it is leaking from both the in and out sides. I tightened it down as much as I could before I thought I was going to break it. So how can I fix this? Should I use some thread sealer or something?

When you say both ends, I am thinking it is leaking were the fittings screw into the filter.. If so unscrew them and use red loctite on the threads. Make sure no nitrous is in the line before taking the filter off.

Good **** there Ricky. Might I reiterate, DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE! I know in NX's instructions it says to use teflon paste or liquid, but absolutely no tape. Not sure of other makers, and many ppl here are running used kits that had little if any directions. I borrowed my old wet kit back after selling it a while ago. The guy had used tape to install it, and when I picked it up I didnt look it over, threw it on and made some runs. The car was bogging hard off the line and pulsing thru the run. I shut it down, check plugs, 5 of the 8 melted the grounding straps off. Looked at the filter and it was clogged with teflon tape! Cleaned it, then used the open line to blow any remnants out as well and later it was fine, but almost cost me a new bottom end. Lucky for the filter, or else it could have been a solenoid stuck open! I learned my lesson.

Ricky
how about a half hour show on the speed channel that talks about nothing but N2O!! think of the possibilities: installs, tech tips, dyno and real world results, shoot outs and not to mention the marketing for NX!!

just a thought.

We did do Crank and Chrome and hi rev tuner. Its been awhile. We are always interest in different medias but the truth be none I do not think any TV show wants a tech series. I might be wrong it would be nice way to show case safety, and uses of nitrous. I will talk with Marketing as see what is in future.

Your are right teflan tape can kill a system. Yet people still try to make it work. Good thing it did not destroy the engine for something so simple not do to.
I like using red loctite on all pipe thread fittings over teflon paste. It is easier and cleaner to deal with.

That's a good idea. Are the fittings a pain to get apart after using the loctite?

Not really. A little bit of heat and they usually come out. Also with red loctite you donot have to overtighten the fitting. Pipe thread really seal pretty easy with the stuff. You do have to let cure for a small amount of time but not much.
