Default NPT/AN question

Can anyone define/describe what the difference is? I haven't started the install of my kit yet but I'm reading through the instructions and have no clue what NPT or AN means. Also just to clarify, I'm supposed to use teflon paste on the NPT fittings? Where are all of the fittings that require the paste?

The AN end uses a tapered seat interference fit for sealing and thus no sealer needed. The NPT end uses interfrence fit in the threads, but is lacking in sealing ability, so using a teflon paste is best.

Just like Beer said, or look on page 12 of your user manual for a picture.

and one quick thing, make sure you use the paste on that stuff and not the tape, it can clog the noids up and cause failure (newbe mistake by me) but that was 4 years ago and im a lot wiser now

It happens lol. You’re doing it the right way, by starting off with reading the manual. Go over it once or twice and if you have any other questions ask, it makes the install go much smoother!

Guess I might as well ask in this thread.

I went to a few different automotive stores looking for teflon paste and no one really knew anything about it. They all just tried to get me to buy the tape. The closest thing I could find is this Permatex High Temp Thread Sealant. Is this the stuff I need?

They should have it at AutoZone/Advance Auto in the sealant section (or even a Sears will have it). If you want you can use some red loctite on the NPT threads if you can't find the Teflon paste.

The Permatex brand is named SEALS PIPE, which I use. Just look for pipe sealant with teflon, in a paste mix, many brands. Or like Ray said, use lock tight.

Hmmm ok, the one I picked up is named THREAD SEALANT but I dont see teflon anywhere. I'll go back tomorrow and see if I can get a refund or swap it out for the Seals Pipe one if they have it. I'd like to keep away from locktite as I dont want it stuck in any particular configuration just in case I decide to switch it up later.

Ive been using locktite 271 on NPT fittings for about 20 years.

Good stuff for an instant locked seal in cold temps applications.

I felt the same way for a long time, but it gives a very good seal on the first go around. The changes are slim that you would have to take one of the NPT to AN fittings out of the base of the solenoid, but if you did have to it really isn't that hard. A vise and a wrench and it'll come apart, haven’t had to heat one up yet (knock on wood).
