Default Should I switch to a colder plug to pray a 200hp shot?

I have a H/C car making just over 550rwhp on a 170hp wet shot. I want to go up to a 200hp shot but I'm worried my NGK TR-6 spark plugs aren't cold enough.

What are your guys recommendations?

I plan on making 570-600rwhp

Damn Jon, your crazy man! I dont see why the TR6 would matter that much more over a 30hp increase on what your hitting now. DO IT!!

I'm making just over 400rwhp N/A........

Yeah, I agree with you Paul. I was just a little worried about spraying a 200hp shot. That's why I sprayed just a little more than a 150hp shot. I was chicken....

I'm deploying in 2 weeks and want to try and hit a 10.50 or so.

How is your nitrous setup coming?

If you are running good Fuel ( i.e. Race Gas ) and your not too aggressive on your timing you should be fine. Once you get around the 250hp mark you will need to go to a colder plug.

Hell yeah bro, hope you get it. My set it is going good. I got my trickflow box from Nitrous Outlet and they said that it checked good. I told them that if they were just checking for a ground they would get it, cause the box will ground just not enough for both noids, Chris and Dave are both really cool and said to just try it again and let them know what happens. Well, a few days ago I had some time so I wired it up real fast and went out to 707 (remember that road) and bam it worked. Dont know why but finally both noids hit not just the fuel. Im still really rich, like 10.2-3 and thats on a 75 shot. First Im gonna hit it with more bottle psi, I only had 775psi when I hit it due to using a buddies bottle. I have mine being filled so I will be able to heat it up, that may lean it up a little. If that doesnt do much Im gonna throw a 100 shot jet in and leave the fuel jet the same and hopefully see mid 11's A/F.

I should have my rear in by July. Im shooting for some 6's out here at out shitty 1/8

let me know how you do!!

If I were you, I'd get yourself a set of NGK 5179's and gap them to .035. They will foul out easily and make the car a little cranky but for racing it's the way to go, alot colder, less likly to damage and they are a hard lug to hurt. If you don't want ot go to the 5179, go to the 5178 at least, same gap.

Better safe then sorry IMO.

I run a 50/50 mix of 92 and trick 106 (or what they claim it to be). I think I'm just going to swap out my TR6's for some new ones and go for it.

Lots of guys I've seen on here are making much more rwhp than me with the same plugs.

I think you are taking an unessassary risk IMO... you might be o.k., but I'd start with a colder plug at first, better safe then sorry

I run the NGK BR-7 on a 200 shot. IMO, if you are over a 150 shot you should not be running the TR6.

Where can you get those plugs? And how much are they? Should I gap them to .035 too?

Thanks for all the replies...... I'm leaning towards new plugs now.

there's a plug chart on a stickie in this forum, you can take that part # to any napa and get them, advance auto also carries NGK stuff. They might have to order them, but they can get them. I just got 2 sets of the 5178 (hot weather motor use for my 13.5 to 1 motor) and it was 32 bucks from my locak napa guy, took him a few days to get, but they got them.

You can definately hurt stuff with too hot a plug, too cold a plug won't hurt anything.

I was going to use the tr6's.

yes atleast a 7

150 shot = 6 at .032 to .035 gap
200 shot = 7
270 shot = 8
300 shot = 9 by this time you should be in the mid-high 20's for gap...

Lythropus has the right idea, but I'd start with a 7 and run that to about 150, at that point I'd put an 8 in, and at about 200 to 225 switch to a 9. Anything over 300 I'd put a 10 in

Jon you seen me run 3 seasons at 135/175/200/250 shots all on #6's gapped at .035. Only when stepping to 285rwhp shot did the 6's fail. So, in my opinion if ya want to play it safe go with the 7's, or stay with new 6's. I plan on running 8's with my 300 shot.

I run TR6's gapped @.35 with a 200 shot! I'v been pretty much ok so far exept I melted one plug a few months ago on my 4th NOS pass of the night. I run just regular super unleaded(93 octane)!! I'm looking to switching to a 7 here soon just to be a little safer.
