Default 35 gap hurts n/a performance

Well, just got back from making a few baseline pulls with a new set of ngk tr6 plugs gapped at .35 for nitrous. Nitrous system didn't work (don't need to get into this) so I made some NA passes on the .35 plugs since I had the dyno anyway. With stock plugs car put down 407......now it put down 360. What the hell? I noticed a NA performance loss when i installed them...

Have any of you had the same experience with the tr6 gapped at 35???

Thanks,
Conrad

Interesting, I closed m TR6s down to .035, I've always wondered if it really did effect power. chikn you say your idle is bad now? Does it hunt?

Never had any power loss on my car, my roommates car, or all the other cars I have done (dyno verified).

I hope this is not true. Mine is gapped at .35 and my car idles fine.. I have not dyno'd her yet, but I do not want to lose any NA power..

for some reason, this car has lost s TON of power due to these plugs. I think the fact that the car is tunned a little rich has something to do with it: the smalled gap produces a smaller "flame" which can't ignite my pig rich charge fully (I would retune the car, but I'm building my 427 next week and do not want to spend the $$$). When I change plugs, all is good and well.

Oh well, looks like no more nitrous runs for me on this motor

You seriously need to upgrade the performance of your ignition system. You are overtaxing the current system. When you run a higher cylinder pressure, you definitely need to increase voltage power,to compensate for the higher pressure the ignition spark has to work through. You might try getting a more powerful alternator, but make sure it won't damage the ECM. You might want to go to a low impedance plug wire, and hotter coil packs.Have you also checked your fuel pressure and all related components, such as, fuel fliter.

FWIW, my car stumbles quite a bit at idle when stopped too. I'm running the TR6's gapped at .35. It was running great on juice, but it did feel like a bit of a sled n/a. I don't have any dyno numbers to back it up though.

If its enough power to feel im pretty sure its about a good 20+hp that you've lost

You know this topic is soo ironic. Everytime I go to the track I swap in TR6's @ .037 and make a few passes all motor than a few on nitrous. Each all motor pass feels like a slug but once the nitrous kicks in it feels normal. On the street with TR55 @ .050 the car has a nice kick but not with the TR6's....maybe there is a power difference. I'll just have to dyno to see.

Dyno who cares. At the track I have run my best NA times w/ TR6' plugs, gapped at .038, and on top of that about 6k miles old (put around 10 bottles thru them before i sold N2O also!).

Cant say I would get better with different plugs, but cant I'd ge towrse either, just know it has run its best with these now!

On my car, TR6's at .045 pulls better than TR55's at .058.

Maybe there is a little truth in the TR6 plugs killing a little horsepower.. BUT my car is not running optimally.. My last dyno with cutout closed showed 408rwhp.. That was with TR55's. Today I did a baseline dyno b4 testing the nitrous and I dyno'd 398rwhp.. Thats a 10rwhp decrease. This dyno was with TR6's.. Now my car was running a little rich because of the new fuel pump, but it was not that bad.. My car dyno's best at 13.1 or 13.2. It was at 12.7 on the first pass.. The next runs were on the spray and we discovered another issue.. I have an ignition issue.. I am changing the plugs and plug wires. A couple of weeks ago I ruined one plug wire pretty bad and I replaced it with a stock plug wire, but I think I damaged some of the other ones as well just pulling them off the spark plug. It sucks having big hands.. Anyway, the power loss could be due to bad plug wires, bad coil pack, car running rich, bad plug, or TR6's.. I am betting on the plug wires.. My car is surging terribly, but the A/F is steady while the hp/tq was going up and down pretty bad. Timing was also steady at 29 degrees from 3krpm to 6900rpm.. I doubt it is the coil pack. Its rare they go out, but we are going to test everything...

Vince, they make a tool that you can use to pull the plug wire off the spark plugs. Look like tongs that you would use in cooking, except for with smaller ends.

It looks like the plugs run different in different cars. I wonder why the differences from one cars to the next. Assuming the fuel to air was the same on both cars, would they be the same?

I wish the tuners would post up about this. Surely they have tested this.
