Default AFR Safety Switch discussion

I have added a Trick Performance V series gauge and one of its many Features is the ability to be a Nitrous System cut off based on AFR (Fuel pressure is another option is your not logging AFR).

Anyways, just for those who have not thought out their tune, you may want to consider how your car responds to this, in your planning of what the cutoffs are and how useful they will be.

I plan on setting my AFR enable switch to 10-12 for the system to function; if you look at the above log that pull did not reach 12.0 until just under 4000 RPM...My Dry shot fires at 2800 RPM

No problem for EFI Live and COS 5 , the custom tune will be active with the arm switch so I will be in the Cutoff window, however those running stock tunes, it may be an issue, if you have to adjust it to say 10-14 for it to fire correctly for your window, how effective is that for maintaining the 10-12 AFR? Based on the above log, I would probably need to set the AFR to around 10-13.75 or so for it to fire as needed.

Thought I would throw that out there for discussion.

Good point. You will always have some spikes weather they are real or just some noise in the signal. The last thing you want is for it to flicker on and off tripping off of little spikes. I wonder if it has a time dealy at all or or if its instant?? I'd bet Ricky would know.

Setting it to 14 or so would keep it above your lean spike (which is very small compared to most) It would definetly offer you some protection but not ideal.

i would hope the switch would have a time feature, where say a 13.6 is ok for say .5 second, but 20.2 is a shut down. where as the AF gets further off, the shorter it allows engagement.

The guage has a delay set time. Meaning once you HIT the trip point the counting will start. range from 0-1. second. If you fall below and then hit again counting starts over, I believe. If you get a trip either move that trip point a littel higher or for a longer period of time. Its a tool, and I think the best one for any nitrous user.

The case I screen-shotted elapased time for the highlighted section is 2.7 seconds.

I think alot of buyers of AFR safety's (not brand specific), may not realize the cause and effects side of tuning and running a AFR Safety Switch. I am speculating a high rate of return, and them getting a bad rap (kinda like FPSS because they are not set correctly) just from not understanding tuning.

Beer, can you read time on EFI? I know I can on HPT, and running a 6-speed and lifting we need to watch out for the on/off thing. I know I have timed my shifts and am under, on average ½ sec, so this should be fine. Some guys have nasty lean spikes on activation, so beware of how long they last. Running dual stages we can also get a lean spike in the midddle of the run, however, from what I have seen these last less than 1 sec.

On the dynos I look at a lean spike like a cam lobe. from 13-1 on the left measure across to 13-1 on the right. This will tell you a good line line of being lean. I have seen 18-1 spikes on a dyno, but 13-13 was under .5 seconds.

Yes lower right of the screen, what is highlighted on the graphs, is displayed as vs time, in the case shown, from 2742 to 3749 RPM is 2.7 seconds. That is how long it takes to get to an AFR below 12 (no tuning).

Short timing here in Singapore...Can't wait to get home and play with the tune and the Gauge, as well, still changing things up on my setup!
