Default Cam Talk

After talking to Jason at the Silvana show about cams and getting a custom grind vs off the shelf I decided to check out the CamMotion web site. I registered and filled out all the info they asked, here is what they sent me for a cam for my car.

RECOMMENDATION

Grind Number: X2081-2121-14+4
Duration: (intake/exaust)214/216
Lift: (intake/exaust).545/.547
Lobe: Center Separation 114
Intake Centerline: 110
PriceUS: $385.00 + SHIPPING

That's about right in the ball park I was looking for but couldn't find in an off the shelf cam.

If you are looking to install a cam in your car I would definately give this a shot.

pretty close to a Z06 cam though... bigger on the intake, slightly smaller on the exhaust and in the lift. Definitely a stealthy one, no one would know it was there unless they really knew what they were listening for.

You could also give Allan Futral a call... Futral goes through Cam Motion for their grinds, and if you don't like one of their off-the-shelf grinds, Allan is a wizard when it comes to whipping up the specs for a damn fine cam to match your description of what you'd like it to do.

Z06 cam has crossed my mind many times too. I've had the lopey daily driver and don't want one again. I like the bottom end of the stock cam, I just want some more pop up top.

I'll give Allan a call too before I decide. But that's pretty much spot on to what I wanted.

Just for comparison....I know a guy with a '98 LS1 TA with bolt-ons and the LS6 intake and LS6 cam who is running 12.2's with his A4.....at lockup, he dyno'd at 360/360 rwhp/rwtq.

His Mods:
DirectFlo Lid, Cut Out, MAC Headers, Vigilante 3800, 3.42 gears, LS6 Cam, LS6 Intake, Ported Throttle Body, ASP Pulley, 160*Thermo, Free Mods

110 is the intake centerline, or ICL. the LSA is 114. It'll hardly lope at all.

need more info to really get a good idea of the cam, but i know that's probably the only specs you're at will to mention. Should drive like a dream too. When's the cam mod party?

Is that with your 1.75s, or stock rockers? Sounds like a nice street cam!

I might be interested in stepping up my cam Ellis. I might be able to squeeze out another 10hp if I tweak the grind a little (can't go very far with my rockers tho - I'm at .555/.555, 220/229 on a 112 now). So if you do this, let me know & I'll see if I can scrape some cash together. Who knows, the car might even idle then.....

Doh... my bad. I was kinda drunk when I read your post. Have you thought about the F-13 from Futral? That's the one I'm gonna try on a 114 LSA.

Thats close to the ls6 cam, but the lobe shapes Thats what makes um run.

That cam should be bad *** for what you want rick. It is always better to let them grind you a cam than go for an off the self grind.

Last time i talked to cam motion i gave the the exact specs of the heads i had done and what do you know there cam matched mine to a tee, lobes and all.

So I guess that proves that you good do it eathier way. Cam to match setup, or heads to match cam.

Those are 1.7 numbers. I have sold my comp 1.75 set up and am planning on going with the Crane variable ratio rockers with whatever cam I end up getting.

That is actually all the info I got from them about the cam. I am sure If I was to start the purchase process they'd give up more info.

They have all kinds of questions on the form to fill out. gear ratio, head size, valve size, flow numbers, engine size, bore and stroke, rod length, what rpms do you want to shift at, power range you want, compression ratio, FI or carbed, boosted or not, weight, converter size, headers and size, mufflers, tire size, what kind of racing, etc......

Pretty cool actually, you can fill this out multiple times and they'll do different cams to match your goals.

Mark, give it a shot and see what they would recommend.

The F13 is too big duration wise for a stock converter'd auto. A mild stall is still a bit off for me, maybe even next year, so I want something that will work well with the stocker in the mean time.

So Jason, will these lobes require new springs every 15-20k?

I would think with some 918s you'd be good to go for a long time, Rick... Just recently saw a post in the Internal Engine forum where someone finally had a 918 spring break after something like 50k+ miles... and that was on an XE-R cam with more aggressive .050 numbers than the one you posted here.

From what I understand, Cam Motion grinds have aggressive lobes, but not quite the ramp rates of an XE-R.

Cool. I think I'm going to go with the Crane Duals for springs and titanium retainers. They are "supposed" to be harmonics free and wont cause knock retard around 5500 r's like some are *supposed* to do. I dunno, maybe it's all gimmicks but some of it makes sense. Specially in an all aluminum harmonic chamber type motor with the knock sensors in the damned valley instead of between the cylinder banks.

Cam and headers sometime this summer!

Probably more gimmicks than anything... but it couldn't hurt. My Patriot "Gold" duals don't cause any kind of knock retard anywhere in the powerband. My dyno chart shows my powerband to be as flat as Kansas. Timing and A/F real steady too all the way until 6800 where we shut it down...

And with those kinds of springs on that kind of cam, you shouldn't have to worry about springs breaking for a LONG time.
