Default QTP Y-Pipe clearance problem

Car is all good, sounds killer, pulls awesome but the cat on the driver's side is too low.

I took the car to that muffler shop in Lake Stevens (Eric's recommendation a long time ago) and he said he can tuck it up more but I have to install a tin plate there to be on the safe side and not melt the carpet inside the car.

Does anybody know a body shop or some other shop where I can have a tin plate fabricated? That would be the best solution because even the lines (brakes and fuel) would be protected.

Thanks!

Yeah, Ive got a QTP catted Y-pipe and the clearance sucks ***. More so than any Y-pipe Ive had on a car yet... and that is many.

I'll be messing with a chopsaw and a welder myself pretty soon, or possibly asking a muff shop to help out.

I sure hope the thing flows well for all this.

Yeah, they flow good but the clearance sucks.

Are you building the tin plate also? I need to find someone that can fabricate one.

That's the problem with the catted y-pipes... either too low so they scrape, or tuck too much and make the underside hot. I know mine has the opposite problem... the cat tucks up really close to the fuel and brake lines. Even though it has that tin plate there over the cat, it still gets hot...

Another guy suggested wrapping. He said if those wraps can withdstand turbo setups heat, it would work fine around the cats.

True or false?

Why not just go all out and get your cat ceramic coated?

Actually, you CAN get the external cat housing thermal coated at Performance Coatings in Auburn, I bet.

I would NOT recomend Wrapping it. If you would like we could modify what you have for better clearance ...but no matter what you do it is still going to be low I figure we could pick up 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch

I won't wrap.

I'm going monday to a machine shop see if they can build a plate to protect the driver's side carpet from heat. After that I'll be able to move the cat up and reshape the curve of that pipe, tucking it up really good.

BTW the car sounds really nice but it's waaaaaaaay too loud. I'll have to do something about it, probably stick a XR-1 after the Y and before the GMMG.

I still want to be able to talk on the phone and/or carry a conversation with the wife, etc...

Cruising on the freeway isn't bad at all, stop-and-go in town it's too loud.
