Default Talk about Stupid!

Read this in the Olympia newspaper today.

http://www.theolympian.com/377/story/146237.html

EVERETT, Wash. — The Washington State Patrol says a trooper arrested two men speeding 141 mph on I-5 in Snohomish County.

The patrol says the trooper thought he was hearing an airplane early Sunday as the cars whizzed by going north - a 2005 BMW 330i with a 2007 Honda Accord right behind.

The trooper caught up with the cars because they had stopped for a passenger from one of the cars to get into the other.

The 22-year-old driver of the BMW, and the 18-year-old driver of the Honda were booked into the Snohomish County Jail for charges of reckless driving.

Sounds like they were taping it... wonder how long that sort of a race takes to get up to that speed.

I hate American speed laws (driving taxes really), but they should have known better

could hear it in my head, started laughing

The good part is they didn't kill anyone like what happened on 167 back in November (?). Stupid BMW kid killed a Mom with a young infant by road racing

I thought the dumbest part was when they pulled over on I-5 to switch passengers! After just passing a cop going that fast...

I wonder how fast that cop was going to catch up with them and if he was going with catching them in mind? Better to use Motorola next time.

And yes, 140+ on I-5 is stupid.

I am guessing he was doing under 140 since I don't know of any LE Crown Vic that can hit 140 and maintain it. That being said, what good would using the radio be (as opposed to going after them him/herself)? SOMEONE has to go fast to catch speeders.....whether it be the guy who saw them or someone else. You can't use spike strips for speeders. Has to be a pursuit. Can't PIT them, has to be a dangerous pursuit, etc. What did you mean by use Motorola? While I firmly believed in getting all the help I could with the radio, some stuff you just HAVE to do. And if you see 2 or more cars going by at that kinda speed, you can't just ignore it.

Not looking for a fight, just wondering what you mean by that. Maybe there is an angle I am missing here.

Since I did not see if the story said how far ahead it was that the police caught up with the speeding cars, there is no real way to determine how fast he had to go, but I am sure it was over the speed limit and less that 140 .

And by using Motorola, I did mean radio ahead. Perhaps it would be safer (for the officer, and the public) if there was another cop somewhere up the road, or even Guardian 1 (or 2, or 3 ...) over head. If not, then I agree, the trooper would have been derelict in his duties not to pursue.

I am just saying that if someone passes by you from a standing stop doing 140+ miles per hour and you give chase with the idea that you are going to catch up to them, you would have to be traveling at warp 8 to achieve that goal .

I don't know how far ahead it was that he caught them, but I think it was mostly due to both cars stopping to switch passengers........not exactly rocket scientists there. As for overhead assistance, I loved it, always recommend it, just don't know what kind of resources they have around here as far as that goes.
My "guess" is that the cop saw 2 cars screaming by, presumed they were racing and figured that they would slow down eventually, cuz unless they confiscate a Lambo or similar car, no one is catching up to them at 140+

And I am hoping he followed protocol and radioed ahead......just may have found them before anyone else got into position?

What a bunch of idiots... not only for going 140+ on I-5 (That's just asking to kill yourself and someone else), but also for STOPPING after passing a cop! All I know is if I passed a cop at that speed, there's no way in hell I'm stopping until I take an off-ramp on to another highway, or turn down some side roads and backtrack my way back behind his position, etc.

That's the problem with going 140+ though... the people who do it aren't usually geniuses and don't think ahead enough.

Here's what komo had to say:

http://www.komotv.com/news/8190802.html

"The trooper clocked the BMW at 141 mph, Rudeen said. The Honda was behind the BMW and was keeping pace.

The trooper spotted both cars pulled over near the I-5 interchange with I-405. Rudeen said the cars stopped to let one of the BMW passengers ride in the Honda."

That still cracks me up!

I dont see what the big deal is. The article makes it seem like 141mph is like warp speed or something. I am still usually asleep at 141mph and Jeff has to wake me up when we get over 160mph. The ride doesnt even get fun till your over 190mph and the BIG fun starts at 200mph.

141mph.....BOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNG GGG

I seriously doubt the Accord was going 140 mph. Anything is possible I guess.

Yeah, it would be tough to mod enough to catch Jeffs ORR car.

I stopped a late 90's accord doing nearly 130 in 1997.........blew by me as I entered the freeway on an uphill onramp. Musta had 15 cars screaming at me to go get her. And I had just gotten off 5 minutes earlier.

She had been drinking (not DUI) and claimed she got a call from her kid/babysitter and the kid was sick. So she needed to do 130 to get home and take care of her kid.....on a Friday night at 11:05.......after she had been drinking.........dumb bitch......BEEEEEEEEG fat ticket........not contested.
