Help...looking @ a 01 sunset orange ss with peeling clear coat!
just like the title says.......
so far the clear coat is peeling on both doors & passenger rear quarter panel...
can just the clear coat be sanded off & then reclear the affected area, or does it all need to be taken off and repainted and then cleared?
and what to do, just do the panels that are affected now or redo the whole car?
i am afraid that more of the car is going to start peeling as time goes by.....
what are the options & whats do you think the cost would be to have a reputable car painting establishment fix this?
thanx john

Im not a paint guy myself but the little experience I do have, it should be able to sand down and reclear. The hard part is telling if the damage is through the clear to the base.
Just a thought, but call a couple local body shops and tell them your story. Check with the seller to see if he can meet you at a shop. You should be able to find a shop that would give you advice, offer you will buy them a pizza for lunch instead of paying an hour of shop rate for a full blown estimate. That worked for me once at a tranny shop!

Take it to a shop. If it is peeling, it needs to be repaired {removed and primed} and then repainted. The shop should be able to help determine how much of the car may have been painted in the past. You will want to have the color blended into the surrounding panels for the best finish. Price will depend on the shop. Could be a thousand, or three, just depends on the shop, the quality, and how much you elect to have done.

I do not believe you will get a good result sanding the clear down to the basecoat and then re-clearing the bad body panels. I would advise living with it or plan on a color blend and re-clear or entire re-paint if you are concerned with any of the other panels.
