Question Winter is coming... rust prevention tips?

I'm in the Chicago area and I know it's early yet but I'm starting to think about winter. I have a 97 that was garage kept and has barely ever seen snow so it has almost no rust. The car is still a daily driver though. Usually it's stored during winter, but no such luck this time around.

Is there any way I can get away with driving it this winter without completely destroying the paint or undercarriage? Or do I have to suck it up and buy a Honda?

Buying a honda would be preferable.

if you do drive, what people do here in CT is occasionally have the underside of the car washed. We have this salt brine stuff on the roads and all of our cars gett coated with the garbage. I say hit the brushless car wash every week and go for the expensive clean.

I drive my wife's SUV when she doesn't need it but I use the undercar wash at least once a week is what I do when I have to drive in the winter.

i tried driving my f-body last winter... its a bad idea, i would just say buy a honda or better yet a jeep cherokee, they are chearper (2-3K) and are 4x4 for the snow.

If you plan to keep it then don't drive it in the snow/salt. I bought this old Escort rust bucket when I was in Michigan. Paid like $300 for it. It was a total embarassment to be seen in it, but my SS never saw salt, and still never has. Turned around and sold the Escort after 2yrs for $300. Ahhh. what memories. There was this dent in the drivers door which when you rolled the window down it opened the door.

it wont destroy it... just wash it atleast once a week, especially underneath.. thats whats I do and my car looks great. also what you can do its put it on jack stands and buy some rubberized spray undercoating and undercoat underneath...thats what I do to every car i have ever owned.. dont sweat it.

Your only decent options are to wash it once a week or get a second vehicle.

Your second vehicle doesn't have to suck though.

I got a Jeep Grand Cherokee two years ago as a winter/tow vehicle and it worked out great.

I vote for the second vehicle also. Not only are winters hard on a car like that, but f-body's aren't exactly the greatest cars for running through the snow. I have a 1990 Oldsmobile 88, and it's a tank through the snow, still runs great (gotta love the 3800), and is still pretty comfortable to boot. Pretty sure you can pick up an Olds or the Buick equivalent for around 1-2k
